"Well, come on, let's go." Helena said, standing up, dusting off her lap.
"Huh, oh I have to ask my mother." Hazel breathed out.
"What are you, five?" Bella said, chowing down on her last bit of pizza."Oh, no, I just have a, uhm... strict, mom." Hazel looked away, a hint of sorrow in her eye. Helena frowned, receiving the well known message.
"Hey, it's no problem," Helena tried to defuse the tension in the air, "We'll wait outside and you call her maybe?" she said, putting her hand loosely on her hip.
"Yeah, that'd work." Hazel took out her phone and called her mother. No answer. She was probably out drinking. Hazel, gaining new confidence, decided if her mother could be out, so could she. She proudly put her phone back in her pocket.
"No answer. So...I'm deciding. I would love to." She smirked."Well, well. Aren't you a big girl?" Helena laughed.
Bella smiled wide. "So, Hazel, why'd you come here in the first place?"
Hazel froze, not wanting to think about it.
"Just more affordable housing I guess."
Bella and Helena both raised their brows, looking at each other, Helena making the 'oh' sound. They all walked down multiple cracked and uneven sidewalks, having to dodge the branches of trees and the occasional piece of trash. Eventually, the sidewalks got nicer, and so did the environment.
Hazel zoned out a little, so when Helena stopped walking, she walked into the back of Helena. Helena jumed a little, turning around quickly. She snapped her fingers in front of Hazel's face twice, snapping Hazel out of her little trance she had.
Hazel looked up confused, looking from side to side at Helena and then Bella.Bella just laughed and shook her head, pushing open a light metal gate. It creaked slightly. They walked on the little cement path to Helena's front door. Helena took out her key from her back pocket and opened the front door, taking in the lime green paint in her sights, feeling the warmness of it on her fingertips as she pushed it open. The setting sun was a beautiful orange, making the orange of the rest of the outside of the house seem warmer than ever. She stepped in, onto the hardwood floors, ushering the two girls in.
"Alright this is my home. I'll show you guys around in a sec, once you take your shoes off. I hate dirty floors." She point down at their feet, already slipping off her boots. Bella, taking hers off, looked at Hazel. "Hey, you don't need to tell me, I've been here before, Hel." Hazel took of her black vans, and set them next to Bella's yellow vans, and Helena's boots.
Hazel looked around, taking in the sight of Helena's home. The light creme of the drywall, the white carpet in front of the door, with muddy boot stains washed in from, assuming years of wear and tear. The brown level of the love seat, and the matching chair. The light tan of the couch. The wall connecting the living room to the kitchen.
The three walked into the kitchen, which was white and very modern. She watched as Helena set the pizza boxes down on the grey and white speckled counter top.
Helena turned around only saying the word "kitchen" she then walked in between the two and behind them, taking a left into a long hallway. They both followed. At each door, helena would open it, and walk inside. Saying at each of the few doors "study", "bathroom", "guest room", and finally "my room".
They all sat in Helena's room, on her large bed, talking about anything and everything. The sun went down behind the grassy plains far away.
"Oh, damn," Helena stated, "its nine thirty, you guys might wanna head home. Unless you wanna stay the night here."Bella laughed, and said "I'll ask my grandma, I'm sure shell say yes." She plucked out her phone from her pocket and dialed her grandmother, walking out into the hallway.
"Hey, Hazel, you okay? You look nervous about something." Helena said.
Hazel stuttered, "huh? O-oh, I'm fine. But I don't know how my mom will react to me coming home this late."
"Oh yeah," Helena out her hand on Hazel's shoulder, "I know how moms can be. Want me to walk you home? Well even if you say no I'm walking you. No girl can walk home alone."
Helena yelled to Bella, "Im'ma walk Hazel home, okay? I'll be back, lock the door please!"Bella yelled back, "Okay, bye Hazel!"
Hazel raised her voice a little, "Goodbye!"
So, the two walked out unto the moonlit streets, towards Hazels home. Surprisingly, she didn't live far at all. Only a few streets. They walked to the mahogany front door, Hazel opening it slowly. She noticed her mother, blacked out on the couch. She made a quick sigh of relief.
Helena whispered, "Sleep well," handing her a sticky note, " And talk to me soon. That's both of our numbers. Don't hesitate to call me if anything, and I mean anything happens." Helena looked at Hazel's mother with a glare.
Hazel put her hand on her friends shoulder, "I'll be fine, I promise."
The two said to each other their good nights, and their good byes. Little did either know, but Helena nor Hazel wanted to part ways.
