Mackenzie's POV:
I get my textbooks out of my locker and start walking to my class for last period. I was able to leave for school today before dad woke up. He has been in a horrible mood all week which means I'm the human punching bag even more than usual. I trip over someone's shoe and drop my books and papers fly everywhere making everybody laugh "Oops. Sorry!" A girl says as she laughs and I bend down to start picking up papers. Somebody bends down to help me and we both pick up the papers "T-thank you." I say and look up to see a boy with blonde hair and beautiful hazel eyes "You're welcome." He says and I duck my head and hurry to class. I sit down in my seat and play with the hem on the sleeve of my sweater. I have to hide the bruises or everybody will know dad abuses me. I feel someone sit in the seat behind me and I sink lower into my chair as class starts

Cole's POV:
I sit down at my desk in History class and realize that the girl that tripped in the hallway is the same girl who sits in front of me in class. Actually eyes in all my classes now that I think about it. I can't believe I haven't noticed her before. When I looked up and saw her bright blue eyes I felt like I was in a trance and then she had stuttered and practically ran away from me "I'll be pairing you up to working on your history assignments. Taylor and Bobbie. Sarah and Abby. Rob and Beth. Luke and Mary. Mackenzie and Cole." She says and then the bell rings signaling that class is over. Mackenzie is that girl's name. Hmm. It suits her. Class ends and she hurries out of the room and I
hurry after her "Mackenzie!" I say and she turns around but keeps her head down

Mackenzie's POV:
After the teacher said we had to be paired up for a project and I got a guy, I hurried out of class before whoever he is can talk to me. More like make fun of me. All the people at school make fun of me. I'm walking to my locker when I hear a guy's voice call my name and I turn around but just stare at my sneakers as they walk closer "Hey, I'm Cole. We're paired up for the history project. When do you want to start? It's due next Friday." The guy says and I shrug "How about we start Monday? I'll be busy this weekend." I say quietly "Can you look up at me? I can't really hear you." Cole says and I take a deep breath and look up at him. Oh no. It's the guy who helped me when I tripped in the hallway. He smiles making my heart flutter "I said can we start Monday? I'll be busy all weekend." I say and he nods "Oh okay. What are you doing this weekend? Anything exciting?" He asks as we start walking back to my locker "Um, not really." I say. I'll be cleaning while dad is in the living room yelling at the football in TV and drinking more alcohol then the game will end and he'll come into the kitchen and start yelling at me for not keeping the kitchen clean all the time

Cole's POV:
I watch as Mackenzie starts getting her stuff out of her locker and putting it in her backpack. She seems very shy. Like she's afraid I'll do something to her. My locker is a couple down from hers so I get my stuff out and walk back over to her "Do you want to walk home together?" I ask and she turns to look at me "I-I don't think that's a good idea. We probably live in two different directions. I don't want you to have to walk out of the way." She says and I nod "Okay. Maybe another time." I say and she grabs her backpack and hurries out of the school doors. I'm going to follow her home because I feel like there is something she's not telling me. I walk behind her at a good distance and realize she's taking the same route home as I do. About ten minutes later she walks up the sidewalk of the house where the guy yells. Wait. She's the daughter! No wonder she's always nervous! Her dad screams at her all the time! She unlocks the door and all the sudden a tall guy appears in the doorway "Where have you been?! I didn't allow you to leave this house without my permission! Get inside you filthy piece of trash!" He yells and grabs her arm and literally pulls her into the house. A couple minutes later I hear her yelp "I'm sorry! I had to go to school!" She yells back. I hurry home and find mom sitting in the living room watching TV with dad and I turn it off "Hey! What was that for?" Dad says and I shake my head "I found out who the girl is that lives in the house where the guy yells all the time. Her name is Mackenzie. She's actually in all my classes and we're paired up for a project in our history class. She has gorgeous bright blue eyes. She's extremely shy and reserved but now I know why. On the way home I follow her to her house and it was that house. When she got there a tall man opened the door and started yelling at her and he pulled her into the house. A couple minutes later I heard her yelp and then she started apologizing for leaving the house without asking him. It was horrible." I say and they shake their heads "I can't believe he acts like that to an innocent girl. I hear that the father doesn't even work. The girl works after school most days. I think she works at the diner in town." Mom says and I sink into the leather chair across from them "It's so sad. Today during school one of the girls tripped her and her books and papers went flying everywhere and I helped her pick them up. She gets bullied at school too. I don't know how she deals with everything. Nobody talks to her at school. She has no friends." I say "You said you guys were paired up for a project, right?" Dad says and I nod "You should invite her to come over here to work on your project. She can even eat dinner here if she wants." He says and mom nods enthusiastically "That's a great idea." Mom says
