Mackenzie's POV:
As I walk into history class on Monday morning I see that Cole is already sitting in his seat "Hey, Mackenzie." He says as I sit in my seat. I turn my head and look into his beautiful hazel eyes and he smiles causing his dimples to show "I was wondering if you wanted to get together at my house after school today to do the project." He says and I nod "That's fine. I just have to be home by ten o'clock or my dad will be mad." I say and something flashes in his eyes but I can't decipher it "Meet me at the water fountain out front after school." He says and I nod. Class ends and I gather my books and head out to the fountain in the school yard, as I sit on the ledge I hear girls giggling from behind me and all the sudden someone pushes me into the fountain "Oops. Sorry! I didn't see you there! Kinda like you were invisible!" A guy says and laughsCole's POV:
I'm walking towards the water fountain to meet Mackenzie when I see a guy push her into the fountain "Oops. Sorry! I didn't see you there! Kinda like you were invisible!" The guy says and everybody around the fountain laughs. Nobody should be treated that way, especially Mackenzie. I run over and tackle the guy that pushed her into the fountain and I'm about to punch him but he flips over and punches me in the jaw. He's about to punch me again when I hear Mackenzie yell "No! Don't hurt him! Please!" She yells and then she appears by my side. The guy gets off me and Mackenzie pulls me up and lays her wet hands on my face as her blue eyes gaze into mine "Thank you for defending me. I can't bear to see you get hurt for me." She says as tears fall down her cheeks and I gently wipe them away "I saw how he pushed you into the fountain. He won't get away with it." I say. We gather up our stuff and head to my house "I hope it's okay that my parents will be home. They said they wanted to invite you to dinner." I say and look over at her. I now realize that the make up she was wearing to cover up the bruises on her face has come off because she fell into the fountain. She has a black eye and there is bruises along her jaw. We get to my house and we walk in "Mom! I'm home. Me and Mackenzie are going to go up to my room!" I say and then mom appears in the doorway leading into the kitchen "Hello, I'm Cole's mom, Mrs. Bryant but you can call me Nancy." She says and Mackenzie shakes her hand "Cole, why is her clothes wet? And why do you look like you've been in a fight?" Mom asks me "Well, I was going to meet her at the water fountain out in the school yard and as I was walking up some guy pushed her into the water and I got mad and tackled him and he punched me in the jaw. Mackenzie stopped him from hurting me more though." I say and mom shakes her head and looks at Mac "I have some old clothes I can give you if want to change out of those soggy ones." She says and Mac nods shyly "If you wouldn't mind." She says quietly "I'll show you where the bathroom is." I say and she follows me down the hallway "I'll be down the hall. My room is the one at the end of the hall." I say and she nodsMackenzie's POV:
I sit on the edge of the bathtub as I wait for Cole's mom to bring me some of her old clothes. I remember my mom before she died. She died six years ago in a car accident when I was twelve. I was always with her, we were either shopping or cleaning the house. No matter what it was, I was always by her side. Dad always accuses me of causing the accident because I was in the car when it happened. I saw my mother die as the car went up in flames around us. A knock on the door pulls me out of my thoughts and I open the door "Here you go. I hope they'll fit okay. They might be a little big though." She says and I manage a feeble smile "Thank you very much." I say and she smiles and nods the walks away. I change into the T-shirt and jeans then look in the mirror. Oh no. My make up is gone. Now everybody can see my black eye and the bruises on my jaw. With this T-shirt on they can also see all the scars and bruises on my arms too. I cross my arms as I walk down the hallway and knock on Cole's closed door "Come in!" He says and I slowly open the door to see him sitting on his bed looking at the History book "Do the clothes fit?" He says as he looks up but his eyes stop at my arms. Oh no.
