Chapter 3
Kathy’s POV
I don’t really know what I was expecting. An older man I guess? I mean, I figured he would be just a normal farmhand. I didn’t know that when I walked out onto my porch, there was going to be a boy that looked as if he came from heaven. His beautiful blonde hair fell just above his eyes, giving him that cute boyish look. I was about twenty feet away, but I could tell that he had eyes bluer than the sea itself. “Kathy, Courtney, this is our new farmhand, Colton.” mom said when we finally made our way towards him. “Hey.” he said sticking his hand out. I smiled, trying not to make it look like I was about to drool all over my boots, and took his hand. His grip was firm, yet gentle. “Hi!” Courtney butted in. “How old are you? Are you from around here? Do you go to school here? How did you get here?” she bubbled. “Courtney, give him room to breath!” mom scolded. Colton just laughed. “I’m fifteen, I’ll be attending the local high school here.” he said smiling. His smile, don’t even get me started. Let’s just leave it at beautiful. Wait, that meant…. He’s my age, and he’s in my grade, and he’s going to be in my school. “Kathy? Are you going to take him to show him the barn?” mom asked. “Um, yeah. This way.” I said walking off. I heard him start to follow me and I took him into the barn. As soon as I opened the door Shadow snorted. Colton laughed. “What’s this pretty girl’s name?” I watched him pet her nose. “That’s my horse Shadow. Courtney’s horse Sugar is right behind you.” I said motioning to the stall behind him. The dapple grey mare flicked her ears at the sound of her name. “They are beautiful. Will I be doing anything with them?” he asked hopefully. “Maybe. You’ll probably help with feeding them. You could probably ride my brother Dustin’s horse if you had free time.” I said casually. “Where is his horse at?” I pointed to the stall at the end of the aisle. “He’s in there. His name is Midnight.” I said referring to the name Dustin had to give him. It suited him well with his shiny black coat. I don’t know how, but Dustin always found the time to make Midnight look gorgeous. Colton casually walked down the aisle towards Midnight’s stall. As soon as he saw him, his jaw dropped. “He’s probably the prettiest horse I have ever seen.” he said in awe. “Dustin always finds the time to brush him and work his muscles.” I said shrugging it off. “What else will I be doing here?” he asked. I liked how he was really interested in his work, unlike the others who didn’t even know what they were doing. “You will probably feed the pigs and help with the cows. Do you know how to work a tractor?” I asked hoping mom asked this in the interview. “Of course!” he chirped. “You’ll be doing that to then.” I laughed at his enthusiasm. “When can I start?” he asked hopefully. “Probably tomorrow if you want. There’s some fields that need to be cut over the hill.” I hooked my thumb over my shoulder in the direction of the hill that hid most of the fields. “Dustin works and can’t be home to cut all the fields.” “Sounds great! I’ll call my brother and have him pick me up then. Tell your mom I said thanks for the job.” He pulled out his cell phone and started dialing a number. Deciding to give him some privacy, I walked into the tack room and decided to start cleaning Shadow’s tack. After a while I heard someone clear their throat behind me. I turned and saw Colton leaning against the door frame. “My brother is here. He’s going to drop me off in the morning too.” he said. “Oh, that’s great!” I said standing up and brushing the dirt off my jeans. I suddenly heard Colton bust out laughing. “What?” I asked really confused. “You’re dusting your jeans off when your face is covered in dust!” he said laughing again. Good thing it was covered in dust, or else he would have seen my bright blush then. I quickly swiped my hands over my face and he laughed harder. He reached into his back pocket and handed me a bandana with the rebel flag on it. “Here.” he said after he calmed his laughter. “Thanks.” I mumbled, embarrassed. “No problem. You can keep it.” he said walking off. I followed him out and saw a large white Chevy parked in the driveway. It had camo trim all around the edges. “About time Colton! God!” a taller guy said. He had the same hair as Colton, but he was more muscular and had brown eyes. “Shut up Beau.” he said climbing in the passenger seat. “See you tomorrow Kathy!” he called out the window. I waved as I leaned against the barn door. “Can’t wait to start working with you!” he called as an afterthought. I guess after noticing his brother was talking to someone besides him, he turned to look at me. I almost melted under his gaze. “I’m Beau, and you are?” “K-k-Kathy.” I stuttered. “Nice to meet you, Kathy.” he said chuckling. “What’s your guys’ last name?” I asked hurriedly before they left. “Reed.” Beau said climbing into his truck. The truck started and they tore off down the driveway. These Reed boys were going to cause trouble. Nothing but trouble.
