Chapter 5
Colton’s POV
I can’t believe he just did that! Beau just asked Kathy to come to dinner with us. I prayed to god that she would say no, especially since Beau asked. I watched her and saw her glance at me and back to him. She seemed hesitant. “I really think I should stay here and help Dustin when he gets home…” she trailed off. “Oh, c’mon! I’m sure he wouldn’t mind you being gone for a couple hours.” Beau tried again. He had his back turned to me, but I could tell he was flashing her one of his grins that made girls swoon. Hopefully Kathy knew better. “No thanks. I think I’ll stay home. Maybe some other time.” she said waving to me and turning to walk down the barn aisle. I let out a breath that I had been holding. Beau climbed in the driver’s seat. “Dude! What the hell!” I yelled as soon as his door shut. “What’s the matter little bro?” he asked casually. “I told you the day I met her I thought I liked her! You can’t just invite her to dinner like that!” I freaked out. “Well, maybe I like her too.” he said casually, pulling out onto the highway. My jaw dropped open. “You may want to close your mouth, I thought I had a bug in here earlier.” My brother liked the same girl as me.
Kathy’s POV
I was still shocked at Beau’s question. He asked me to go to dinner with him and Colton? Why? When I said bye and walked down the barn aisle, I could have sworn I heard Colton yelling as soon as he got in the truck. What did that mean? I shook my head, trying to shake the thoughts. I decided to take Shadow out on a ride. When I was tacking her up, I heard Dustin’s truck pull into the driveway. I peeked my head down the barn aisle and saw him coming in. “Hey!” he chirped. I automatically raised an eyebrow in question. Dustin was never chirpy after work. “Did you, um, have a good day?” I asked cautiously. “Oh my god, yes. Best day ever. Are you taking Shadow on a ride or did you just come back from one?” he asked. “I’m getting ready to take her out-” he cut me off. “Great! Let me tack up Midnight and I’ll come with you!” he strolled down the barn aisle and into the tack room before I could even comprehend what he had just said. I was still shocked at his behavior. Something really good must have happened at work today for him to be happy. After about five minutes, he had Midnight tacked up and led her outside. I was sitting on Shadow, playing with her mane, while I waited. “Leggo.” he said, hopping on top of Midnight. We took off cantering through the fields and Dustin came to a stop at the edge of the woods. “Have you been on the wooded trail lately?” he asked. I shook my head. I never took the trail in the woods because Shadow always got spooked. “Shadow gets spooked easily remember?” I said. He nodded. “Let’s try it anyway. I’ll walk Midnight right beside her.” he said waiting for me to come up to his side. I took a deep breath and led her onto the trail. “She’s doing great.” Dustin commented after riding in silence for awhile. “Are you sure she hasn’t gotten over her little spooked stage?” “I haven’t rode her in the woods in forever.” I brushed his question off. He whistled, looking up into the trees. He looked as if he was in a complete opposite world than me. “Why are you so happy today?” I asked. “I got promoted to the assistant manager today!” he chirps. “That’s great..” I trailed off, unsure of how him getting promoted could completely change him. “I don’t have to get up so early anymore and I get a better pay now too.” he said. I nodded. I guess that was a good thing for Dustin. He did like his sleep. We were at the end of the trail where it overlooked a huge valley like thing. It had a creek below and usually there was a whole bunch of wildlife up here. I forgot how breathtaking the sight was. Dustin had nicknamed it Critter Valley when we were younger. “I missed Critter Valley.” he said, almost as if reading my mind. He sighed in content and relaxed in the saddle. I copied and leaned back to pop my back against the back of the saddle. “So, how was your day? I didn’t scare off the new farmhand yesterday, did I?” he asked jokingly. Great, a topic on one of the Reed boys. “Nope. He’s still here. He has a brother your age..” I trailed off. I didn’t know how I wanted to bring up Beau to him yet. I didn’t know Beau that well, but I could tell that he was a complete opposite of Dustin. They probably wouldn’t get along very good. “Oh yeah? What’s his name?” His eyebrow quirked up in interest. His bright blue eyes twinkled in the light. “Beau Reed.” I said watching his reaction. “You mean, that little boy that works here is a Reed?” he asked sternly. I nodded my head watching his reaction. “I felt bad for yelling at him yesterday, but now I know how he is and I don’t.” he said glumly. I instantly felt bad for bringing it up. He seemed so happy a minute ago and I busted his bubble. “Is this a bad thing?” I asked. “I don’t like Beau. And if his little brother is like him, I don’t want you near him.” he said turning to look at me. His blue eyes showed nothing but seriousness. I nodded. I definitely am not bringing up the dinner invite then. I turned back to Critter Valley and watched a rabbit hop through the tall grass. “I think it’s time to head back now.” he said quietly. I turned Shadow around and headed back towards the farm. After Dustin and I had put the horses up and the tack, we were headed back into the house when he stopped me by grabbing my arm. “You know I wasn’t kidding earlier right?” he said turning to face me. For once can I stay away from the topic of any of the Reed brothers? It was bad enough I thought they were both given the looks of a god and the older one invited me to dinner, but now my brother giving me lectures about them? “I’ll be fine Dustin.” I said. “I mean it. Beau is a tool. I imagine his brother is just like him. He’s the older guy in the family and he probably thinks Beau is his role model. I don’t want you near him.” “That’s kind of difficult seeing how we both have to work together.” I said. “Anything out of work, no. He can’t hang out with you after school, he can’t ask you on dates, he can’t touch you, and he can’t hurt you. Okay?” “Dustin, I’m fine. Let’s just go in.” I said looking towards the safety of the house. He wouldn’t say these things in front of mom. He let go of my arm which I forgot he was still holding and started towards the house letting out a breath of air. “I’m just a protective jerk over you ‘cause I love you.” he said. “I know. I love you too, protective jerk.” I said jokingly, trying to lighten the mood. He finally smiled and ran his fingers through his dark hair. “Now c’mon. I’m hungry and I smell food.” he took off jogging towards the house. That left me with my own thoughts. What would Dustin do if he knew that Beau asked me to dinner? What did Dustin find that was so bad about Beau? I mean, yeah, they are complete opposites, but that shouldn’t matter. Me and Jessica were complete opposites and were best friends. I think we still are anyway. I sighed as I walked towards the house. Now Dustin was in the mix with Colton and Beau. These Reed boys were going to cause a lot more problems than I thought they would.
