Shannon shrank down to the floor. I gasped when things seemed to piece together in my head.
"Zach, what do you mean 'it's Mrs. Eva'? He turned toward me.
"El, I mean its Mrs.Eva, our teacher, who tried to kill us, or...do whatever this Rapter .02 thing is supposed to do." Zach looked tense as he said this. Even though there had been plenty of mistrust in the government, I never would have guessed that our teachers would have been a part of the schemes and then try to hurt us. No wonder they didn't seem phased by the disease. They...knew. Hell, they could have planned it for all we know.
"Woah, I mean, we don't know who the officials could be now."
Shannon was angry looking, "Yea, no shit Eddy! That's why we all look so damn shocked right now. You don't have to state what's already running through all of our heads."
"Shan, calm down." I walked over and lowered myself to sit down next to her. Her blonde hair was a complete mess and her brown eyes looked anxious with fear, and I felt really bad for her that it made me this upset. "It'll be ok, there's four of us."
"Ellie, how the hell is this gonna be okay? Eddy just killed our teacher and she was trying to hurt us. Now we find out that whoever has," she pointed to the little touch screen device Zach was now holding again, "one of those things, can know where we are. And on top of that we don't know why. How can they see us on that little thing? Huh? Oh and, let's not forget the tsunami which we know cause of the "tracking device", is well on its way." Shannon looked so out of breath after her little rant. She let out a huff like a little girl taking a tantrum.
"Listen Shannon, we're gonna be alright. We just have to be smart and think about our decisions. Ok?" Zach tried to calm her down as Eddy went and stood on the other side of her. Shannon just nodded but still continued to look as shocked as I felt. I help her to her feet and Eddy took her other side. We have to get moving or more officials will probably come for us.
Zach glanced down before looking at us, "Ok, so what I'm thinking is that with this tracking thing you can only see people who are in range. Cause right now there are only the five dots, us and Mrs. Eva, but the screen shows all of Birchwood if you zoom out, but still out dots too. So that means we have to be extra careful cause someone or an official could just show up on screen as we move."
I nodded, "Ok, so lets go then?" I waited for one of them to respond.
"Yea lets go." Zach whisper-shouted. Then he nodded at Eddy who grabbed Shannon's arm lightly and started walking forward down toward the end of the hallway. "I'll keep an eye out for officials." Zach gestured down to the small device in his hand.
I moved closer to Zach and leaned in toward him as we walked further down the corridor. "Wh-what are we going to do?" I didn't want to come off as stupid, but I had no idea; all of this new information was just too much for me and my brain to process.
Zach looked at me and smiled a sympathetic smile, "We're goin to have to find a way out of here out into the Zone that's not the main gate." I nodded and glanced down at the device he was holding. The moving dots on the screen were scaring me. I mean people could know where we were at any time and if we're not careful, that could be it. We could be caught and who knows what could happen.
As I pushed my overactive imagination aside, I focused on how we were about to reach the end of the long flashlight lit hallway. As the darkness got closer and closer, my heart rate quickened. Suddenly, next to me, Zach stopped abruptly and held up the tracker. We all stopped and looking at it I could see that a dot with an "O" had just come on screen. We all froze, and watched to see what direction it was going in. Hopefully these officials aren't obsessed with checking the trackers.
The "O" green dot kept moving closer and closer and I wanted to disappear, but then it turned off screen down another hallway. Something suddenly dawned on me, "Hey guys, how do you think their tracking us?"
"I don't know, it could be a whole number of ways." Eddy exclaimed. "I mean, even the officials are on the tracker and they know it, so...oh never mind I'm so confused." He looked so deflated and I felt for him. We continued walking anyway and in an instant we came to a door. Who knows what's behind it? I shivered at the thought. Someone could know. Someone could be watching...waiting. OMG!
We all huddled around the door and looked at one another. I took Zach's hand as he looked at me, "Ready guys?" I nodded and so did Eddy and Shannon. I felt so anxious and I just wanted to get out into the Zone already, despite being told not to my whole life. It felt horrible being betrayed by someone you knew. My teacher!
Zach nodded and then reached for the handle of the door. I felt everyone hold their breath around me as his hand pressed down on the handle. The door clicked and then Zach pushed it open slowly, as he kind of pulled me around toward his back in a protective manner. Awwww! Once the door was open fully, the four of us started to proceed inside the new room. I was dark but on the opposite wall, there were huge screens with all kinds of words and numbers and charts and pictures on them. It was extremely daunting to look at as we made our way closer and closer toward them. At some point a light went on and I momentarily freaked until I realized Shannon and Eddy were no longer behind us, and over by the wall standing next to a light switch. The light revealed the room to be pretty huge, like a warehouse. It also illuminated everything enough to see that there was no one else in here except for us as far as I could tell.
I stood up a little taller as Shannon and Eddy made their way back over to us. We all walked over towards the many screens and started looking at what they said. I ran my hand over one and it was so sleek. It felt cold, like metal. When my finger pressed down on it, it made a little imprint. My gaze was broken when my friends started talking.
I looked towards Eddy's voice. "Guys look, its like a bigger view of the tracker." Sure enough it was. It was huge and you could see everything without zooming in. Everyone but Shannon gathered around the screen Eddy was looking at. As I glanced across the many green dots, I noticed there weren't any with "O" on them, like anywhere. I was just about to say something when Shannon's shaky voice redirected my attention to the screen she was looking up at.
"Guys...I-I think y-you should se-see this."
