reckoning song // asaf avidan
_____________________________________________________________________________
I'll write our lives down in leather-bound notebooks
and I'l leave them on the seaside.
You'll know exactly where to find them.
I won't include your name,
I never do.
But you'll read my words
scrawled across the shore.
You'll remember exactly the way I made you feel.
Then the tide will sweep them out,
just as God intended them to do.
You'll try to catch me as I float out to sea,
but it'll be exactly as the past.
You'll be too late.
When we're old and grey,
we will read the stories
written on our hearts.
Our grand-kids will sit at our feet,
listening to the same songs we did.
I'll tell them how I broke your heart,
and you'll tell them how you broke mine,
and then they'll ask,
"Grandma? Grandpa? How are you guys together now then?"
And we'll look at each other,
and we'll smile,
and we'll thank the sea
for keeping both our secrets.
