Scream

I've always wanted to live in a cabin in the woods. All quiet and surrounded by nature. I loved the peaceful feeling you get when you hear and see the woods around you. The clear nights where you can see the stars in plain sight. There was something about these woods though. Something more eerie. My dog would stare out into the woods, growling at "nothing." I couldn't sleep well at night. I always felt the presence of something strange, lurking outside my cabin. I would look out my window but never see anything. I would hear the noises though. The inhuman screams. I would have to cover my ears because they were so loud and then they would eventually fade into the night. Whatever it was would sometimes leave dead carcasses of animals near my cabin as if leaving a warning. I wanted to find out what this thing was, why it was preventing me from living peacefully.

One night the screams were so loud, my dog started barking and scratching at the door as if it were just outside it. I grabbed my gun and stood by the door, preparing myself for whatever it was. I kicked open my door but the thing had already high tailed it out of there and back into the woods, still screaming. My dog started to whine and cower back inside the cabin. I looked back out towards the woods and saw what I think was two pure black eyes. I was caught in it's gaze but I had to cover my ears again because of the screaming. I quickly went back inside the cabin and slammed the door and set my gun down, the screaming now subsiding.

I don't know why I didn't leave my cabin and I ask myself all the time why I didn't. All it did was cause me despair and headaches. I was determined to find out what this thing was so a while after I decided to venture into the woods like the idiot I was. My dog came along with me and I grabbed my gun and we set out. The trees creaked as we walked and the twigs snapped under our feet. My eyes would scan everything and my head would turn sharply around whenever I heard a sound. My dog was whimpering and would growl randomly. We were pretty deep inside the woods when we heard it. The scream. It wasn't as loud as usual which probably meant that the thing was a pretty fair distance away.

It felt like hours and the screams would drone on. I felt like it was time to head back when suddenly the screams stopped. Nothing was making any noise, not even my dog. He had stopped whining and growling. He was staring in a certain spot though and that's when he started to growl loudly again. I stared to the spot where he was looking but didn't see anything and I didn't dare go any closer, knowing that there was something there and I just couldn't see it.

I don't know how long my dog and I stood there looking at that spot until suddenly the most ear piercing scream ripped through our ears. I thought I had gone deaf but I heard my dog barking like mad. That's when the thing finally emerged from the spot we've been staring at. One large clawed foot which seemed to be covered in short fur stepped out and along with a clawed hand. The other foot and hand which were showing more bone than fur soon followed and then the head. I've never seen anything more terrifying. It had the head of a wolf but you could see the skull in spots. It had what seemed to be blood dripping from spots of its face and it had ripped ears and those pure black eyes. The thing was very tall and skinny and I could see its ribs and more bones which were exposed.

The wolf like thing let out another piercing scream and I had to drop my gun to cover my ears. My dog had already taken off without me and I didn't bother to pick up my gun as the thing advanced on me. I turned around and started to run through the trees as fast as I could, not looking back. I could still hear its screams as I ran but they were more blurred because of the wind. I couldn't hear my dog and I just prayed that he had made it out. I kept running and my lungs and throat burned from my heavy breathing but I knew I couldn't stop. I heard the screaming finally come to an end and that's when I stopped running. Tears fell from my face and I looked around where I was. Nothing was familiar and I knew I was lost. How could I be so stupid? I didn't think I would get this lost but I should have seen it coming.

I started walking in the direction I thought was the right way after I calmed down. I heard everything fall silent again and I stopped in my tracks. I didn't hear the footsteps but I felt it. Right behind me. That's when it let out the brain rattling scream once again and everything went black.
