Chapter 1

Anna’s POV

I grabbed my purse, before happily skipping down the stairs into the living room of my house. It was a Friday afternoon in May, and I really needed a break after a long week.

“Hey mom, dad, I’m going over to the Loftner’s for a bit” I informed my parents, sticking my head into the living room so they could see me. “I might stay there over night, okay?” I added. The Loftners were our neighbours, and close family friends.

“Okay,” my dad replied. ‘But get back to us about the staying over part, ‘kay sweetie?” he finished. I nodded. “Don’t worry, I’ll call you.” I said with a smile.

My mom walked over to me “Bye Anna”, she grinned, giving me a kiss on the cheek. “Bye, Ashley!” I called out, peaking to the staircase to yell out to my little 16 year old sister, Ashley Hastings, who was doing her teenage stuff upatairs. As I approached my front door, I threw on my favourite flip flops and headed outside.

It was hot- around 31 degrees, but there was nothing special about that- Spring and Summer were always pretty hot in Toronto.  I walked across the driveway over to the Loftner’s residence, and stopped at their doorstep.

The house was large enough. Slightly bigger than ours, with an extra room or two. It wasn’t a mansion, but not something anyone would complain about.

I knocked on the Loftner’s door. I waited a couple of seconds and looked down at my plain nails, making a mental note to paint them later on when I get back home, The door openedslowly . I was then kindly greeted by Mrs. Loftner.

“Anna! Why am I not surprised to see you here?” she joked. I laughed.
