Everything happened so fast.
I was speeding down the highway, rage building up by the second, to the extent that it was all that was left. It completely took over me.
I searched for the deep blue Escort he drove, as if my life depended on it.
Finally I saw the prize. I hit the gas as hard as I can, and headed straight for it.
All during this time, I felt something wasn’t right. I was trying to ignore the part of me that was trying to tell me what was wrong. But I couldn’t fight the vague thoughts that were creeping into my conscience.
DON’T. DO. IT. Something in me screamed, louder than everything else I was thinking.
I gasped and obeyed, the sense in me finally coming through.
I hit the break as hard as I could.
But for some odd reason, the car wasn’t stopping! I tried again, frantically attempting to stop the car, but there was no way of stopping.
I hit the horn to warn Austin that my car would hit his in less than a second, knowing it couldn’t possibly stop the collision.
I opened my door, and rolled out of my car, which was going at over 70km/h. My back hit the gravel hard as I hit the ground, but I ignored the pain, knowing it was nothing in comparison to Austin’s injuries.
Sure enough, my car sent his flying into the highway boarder.
“Austin!” I screamed, hoping for an unlikely response. I stumbled over to his car.
I climbed through the hole in the windshield, which was barely large enough for me to squeeze through.
The shattered glass scraped against my skin, but I didn’t have the right to flinch or look at the blood that was no doubt pouring out.
I opened his driver door and as carefully as possible, pulled his body out onto the gravel.
I went into my pocket grabbed my phone and dialled 911.
“Send an ambulance over to highway 27 nearest exit 48” I spoke quickly into the phone before hanging up.
I pressed the back of my hand lightly to different parts of his neck, wrist and chest. Luckily, just were his heart was, I felt a very weak pulse.
I checked to see if he was breathing. To my shock, he wasn’t (note the sarcasm).
I gave him mouth to mouth as quickly as I could, until I felt his small exhale against my skin.
As I expected, he was still unconscious.
I dabbed all of his visible cuts with my scarf and some freshly fallen snow.
As I did this, I talked to him, Even though he probably couldn’t hear what I had to say, you never know.
“Austin, I didn’t mean to do it. I mean, I did at first, but I tried to stop, and the breaks didn’t work and this happened anyways, and I just wanted you to know that and…” I sighed. I was rambling. Better stay focused.
He had a fairly deep, long one on his forehead, a long one on his right arm, and an very fleshy one that went down his chest. He had several small ones all over him as well. I made sure to get every one.
“You won’t die” I told him, even though we both knew I couldn’t promise that. He was in critical condition!
I realized how thin his hoodie was and how cold it was. Even though the sun was slowly rising, giving the sky a shade of orangey grey, it was still cold.
I unzipped my jacket, and put it on Austin. I zipped up the zipper, hoping it would help keep him warm.
The sounds of sirens were nearing, and I knew there was nothing left to do.
I pulled out an old bill and a pen, and scribbled a quick note.
Sorry for everything, Austin. Sorry for getting away with it.
I placed it in his jacket pocket. If he died, someone else would see it.
I emptied my pockets out next to him. I had no use for that stuff anyways.
I tapped him lightly on the chest, in a parting way. Then I walked off, letting the tears fall.
Ok so what do you guys think just happened? I gave some hints, to describe subtly what’s with him, but he won’t be in the cast anymore.
