Fighting for Home (an apocalypse story)

Chapter 1: The Beginning

Zoe's  POV

Woah, wait. We need to back up aways if you're gonna understand any of this story, or care. Allow me to start at the beginning......

It was a Friday, the day the world started to end. Looking back, I was an idiot. Seriously, whose biggest problems are worrying about the next time you go to the dentist, or the speaking portion of an upcoming French exam? Anyway, the day felt like it was going to drag on forever. My gaze traveled out the window of the classroom into the enclosed courtyard and then to the sports fields and tennis courts beyond. Looking diagonally to the classrooms across the courtyard, I scanned the row of windows until I saw him. My best friend Kyle, in Mrs. Galette's art class. He looked up and, seeing me, grinned and held up his drawing. I could just make out the four beautiful Arabian stallions silhouetted against a pastel orange and yellow sunset. He was seriously amazing at oil crayon drawings. I gave him a subdued thumbs up and smiled back, then glanced nervously towards the front of the room. Maybe Mrs. G wouldn't notice a conversation through the windows, or care, but Mr. Bourne, my algebra teacher, definitely would. Kyle smiled one more time, then went back to his project.

We have been friends ever since he moved in down the street from me around 5 months ago. On his first day of school right after April break, he had a bunch of classes with me and of course I had volunteered in the beginning of the year to be one of those people who shows new kids around, so I was charged with showing him around and making sure he knew where everything was for the first week. At first I was bummed and annoyed that I had to drag some guy from California around, thinking he'd be about as smart as most of the other guys in my grade, which would be not very smart at all, but he quickly proved me wrong. It turns out that he loves horses and being outside about as much as I do, and he also used to live here in New York until he was 8. So, we have pretty much been friends ever since.

       "If you are finished with your assignment please pass it forward. If not, you will be completing it for homework." Mr. Bourne's voice cut through my thoughts. I looked down at my worksheet on graphing quadratic functions. I had 3 problems left. Great. I glanced down at my watch and then began gathering up my notes and clicking them into my binder. The bell rang, and everyone jumped up.

       "Have a good weekend" said Mr. Bourne as we all filed out the door. I said goodbye and then went to meet my other best friend, Abbie at my locker.

       "Hey" I huffed as I spun the wheel of the combination lock

       "Tough Algebra class?" She asked. "You know, I could help you out sometimes if you want"

Abbie is really smart. She takes advanced math and science. I'm pretty sure she is going into her junior year next year with only one more math, science, and history credit left before she can graduate.

       "No, I think I'll be okay" I said as I pulled a few binders out of my locker and slid them onto my bag. "Kyle and I are supposed to study for the test together, but if we get confused I'll FaceTime you."

       "Okay" she said. I shouldered my bag and we walked towards corner of the hall where we usually wait for Kyle.

       " Did you see the news yesterday about the new cancer thing?" Abbie asked

      "No, but let me guess" I replied, spinning around to face her and throwing my hands up dramatically. "The scientists have discovered a magical race of aliens that have the cure and all we have to do to get it is teach them how to use a blender because they've always wanted to try a smoothie but they never knew how to make one." She bursts out laughing and I smile.
