When the three girls woke up, it was gray and misty. This didn't help lighten their mood, considering the fact they still had at least two days left of walking. They didn't really talk at all while gathering their stuff from the ground and tree. They ate some squirrel, got some berries, and were on their way. They had been walking through the forest for about an hour before Ember finally struck up some conversation.
"So, um, how's the family?" Ember asked. "Doing well I hope?"
"Well, my two brothers are dead, my mom's dead, my dad's dead." Brax replied sarcastically. "So yeah, doing great."
"Oh, Really?" Jazz asked Brax, quiet as always. "So are mine. The only way I wasn't killed was because I locked myself in the bathroom and hid in the cupboards under the sink."
"I think we all have similar stories," Ember joined in. "Narrowly escaping while our families fought to the death. It's a wonder all three of us weren't infected. We're all around the same age, right? I'm seventeen."
"So am I," Brax said. "How old are you, Jazz?"
"Seventeen," said Jazz perplexedly. "Wednesday looked about that age too. Do you think that girls around that age range are immune? There still may not be many because their family members got to them, but it could be possible."
"You're right!" said Ember excitedly. "I guess we finally found the one flaw in the virus. It can't affect moody seventeen year old girls with weird names."
They all chuckled at this and the mood was considerably brighter. They continued on their way, hoping they were going in the right direction. After an hour they came out of the forest and onto a road. They continued walking, making some small talk but mainly staying quiet. Eventually Jazz saw a building in the distance with smoke coming out of it. She pointed it out and Brax grinned and pumped her fist in the air.
"Wooo!" shouted Brax. "Finally! We were closer than we thought! Oh, I can't wait to get my hands onto that robot "Slayze" and its army! We can finally put an end to all of this."
"I can't let you guys go in there," Ember finally said solemnly. "I started this, and I need to finish it. I already put you in more danger than you were already in. I don't want you guys to get hurt because I wanted to end what this robot did."
"Oh no," Jazz suddenly retorted. "You are not pulling one of those acts on us. No sir. Nuh uh. This is not like in the movies. You cannot be thinking that we are going to let you go and do that on your own. We are coming. You're crazy if you think we won't. Even if it takes us jumping from rooftop to rooftop out of your sight, we will follow."
"Um, Jazz," Brax interrupted. "I'm all for staying together and whatnot, but I did not sign up for jumping across 4 story buildings. I promised my mom I would at least stay alive until I was eighteen."
"Oh come on," Jazz said, sounding exasperated. "We weren't actually going to do that. I may sleep in trees but that doesn't mean I enjoy heights. Now come on, let's go."
But as they turned around to go with Ember, she was nowhere in sight. While Jazz and Brax were talking, she had slowly snuck away and was now sprinting along the road towards the building in the distance.
"You've got to be kidding me right now," Brax growled. "Of course she would do that. Come on Jazz, we're following her."
"Can we surprise her?" Jazz asked, smiling. "Let's let her think she got away with it. We'll follow her from a place she can't see us, and when she goes in the building, we'll make a surprise appearance. Even better if we can jump in while she is in the middle of fighting the robot. Slayze, I think it was?"
"Yep, sounds like a good idea to me," Brax agreed. "Let's go."
This may have seemed a bit shorter but I had to end it somewhere :P. Also, bad titles, and 7th grade writing skillz. Anyways, hope you enjoyed. :)
