The truth is "hate speech" only to those who have something to hide.

I waited on the grass outside the school when the day was over for fifteen minutes before I called my mom. It rang four times before I hung up, frustrated. I lay on my back, covering my face with my arms to keep from burning my fair skin. I heard footsteps beside me and I separated my arms enough to look above me.
“Get forgotten about?” Braxton asked, and I sat up.
“I’m not sure. Roth and Elise haven’t come out yet either,” I said, and I bit on my lip absently.
“Why do you do that?” Braxton asked again, and I looked up at him.
“Do what?”
“Bite on your lip. Some people do that, but it seems like every time I look at you you’re chewing on it,” Braxton replied, studying me.
I stood up and brushed off my butt. “I don’t know, I’ve always done it. Apparently even when I was a baby. That’s how I got this scar,” I said, and stepped closer to show it to him. He bent his head down to look, and I tilted my head up slightly. Suddenly, I was aware of just how close we were, and what it would look like to anyone else. My head tilted up to his while he bent towards me, his attention on my lips…
My heart beat slightly faster, but as soon as the moment began, it was over. Braxton stepped back and smiled at me. “I’ve never seen a scar like that before.”
I took a deep breath and smiled, trying to appear normal. “I’m special like that,” I said. He chuckled, even if it wasn’t that funny, just to alleviate the awkwardness.
“Do you need a ride home?” Braxton asked. I looked all around me one last time and saw none of the Tapfer clan.
“I guess it looks that way.”He grabbed my bag off the ground and put it on his own shoulder, and I followed him to his car. He unlocked it and threw my bag in the small back seat, and I got in. The interior was hotter than I expected, since it was black leather and it’d been sunny all day. I gingerly put on my seatbelt, avoiding touching the metal clip.
“So, what is this again?” I asked as he put the car in reverse and backed out of the parking spot smoothly.
“Scion TC, I got it as a present when I got accepted into college.” I couldn’t imagine that happening to me; at best, I would get a car older than me. I ran my fingers on the now cool leather.
“That must be pretty nice,” I murmured.
“Well, I guess you could say it was my parent’s way of making me feel better about going,” he said as he followed the directions I gave him to my house.
“You don’t want to go?” I asked, and Braxton shrugged.
“I’d love to go to college, if I got to choose what I go for,” he replied. This caught my attention.
