Chapter 1

"I just don't understand."

"Jane you know I can't."

"But why? We caught Red John, you said you loved me and now you're running away from that again. I promised I wouldn't hurt you-"

"Patrick."

"Teresa.", he says mimicking her.

Teresa groans in complaint, pressing the button for the elevator and avoiding eye contact. Her consultant enters with her ignoring Teresa's request to leave her alone and instead continuing to harass her. Jane was in love again and he didn't want to lose Lisbon as well.

"Look at me.", Jane begs, feeling as though he's losing her, "Teresa please!"

She doesn't say anything and only stares at the screen counting down to the first floor. Jane debates his options, he could force her to look at him? No that's to harsh he would never hurt her like that...maybe argue more? That might not work either. The elevator pings at its stop and Lisbon walks out with Jane following faithfully behind. It had been a long day and all she wanted was to go home. The only thing wrong with this plan was that after starting a relationship with Jane she let him move in. It was only when things started to get serious did she begin to panic. One night stands and meaningless relationships were one thing, but a serious relationship? She didn't deserve be loved, in her heart Teresa knew it was wrong to let herself be happy. There was just so much guilt, how was she supposed to tell Jane? How would he react to this?

Jane, on the other hand, couldn't understand what he did wrong. He loved Teresa so much and when they began a relationship it was like he was finally free to show her just how much he loved her. He knew something was wrong, the more he loved her the more she slowly but surely shied away.

"Oh! Hi!", says a young girl who comes up to the two of them. There's a sad boy with her who stays focused on the ground, not wanting to look up.

Teresa brushes past them with Jane at her side. It was becoming a common thing for people to randomly harass the couple to find out just how Teresa captured Red John.

"It's not nice to leave when someone's talking to you!", the girl blurts out before walking faster to keep up."Don't you want to meet your son!?"

The agent immediatly falters and turns to face the girl. The teenager holds out a piece of paper triumphantly and the boy standing next to her backs away. It was a birth certificate. Jane looks over Lisbon's shoulder to see what it says only to step away and give her a baffled expression.

"You have a son?"

"Emily this is a bad idea," states the boy before he looks up at Teresa. "Forget about it, I'll disappear I promise you'll never see me again."

"Peter we got all the way here!" Emily, the teenage girl, starts to argue, "Don't tell me your backing out now!"

Lisbon stands there speechless, what was she going to say? What could she say? Peter...that's what she named her son before giving him up. Jane, who is more confused then ever, gives her a look of betrayal. How could she keep this from him? They were in love! Well, the surprise engagement he had planned is going have to wait.

"This is what you couldn't tell me isn't it? That you have a son."

"Patrick please-"

"I can't talk to you right now." And with that Jane leaves, to frustrated and confused to even look at her. How could she do this to him? Out of all the secrets she could've kept...

Teresa doesn't chase after Jane and instead studies the birth certificate. It looked authentic but there was one thing she had to be sure of. Peter had been born with a birthmark on his right shoulder, it looked as if a drop of red dye had splashed on his skin.

"Peter, let me see your shoulder. The right one."

The boy obeys and Lisbon's heart nearly breaks. The birthmark was there, this was her son. Finally after all these years she got to see him again.

The agent hastily wipes away her tears,"Do you want to go to Starbucks with me? Your friend can come too." Lisbon had so many questions she wanted to ask, Jane was going to have to wait. Right now she only wanted to be with Peter.

Peter nods in response, not knowing what to do or how to react. Today was meant to be his last but with meeting his real mother...maybe he could put suicide on hold. Emily, who is ecstatic for reuniting Peter with his mother, gleefully agrees and takes Peter's hand in hers having him walk with his mother. Emily's day was going great, she had made a friend and reunited him with his mother. She was on top of the world!
