Chapter 6
Jacob's P.O.V:
I woke up and the bed next to me was barren. I expected that from her, but it still worried me. It was already noon and I knew that she got up early because the bed was cold and I had managed to wrap myself in the whole blanket. I got up and decided to shower before I went to look for her.
After my shower I got dressed into the only clothes I had up here and sprayed down with some cologne that I found in the bathroom cabinet. I walked into the kitchen and didn't see Dakota. She wasn't in the cabin at all. I went outside and saw her truck sitting there, but her four wheeler was missing. Shit.
I tried to see if I could hear the engine running anywhere but I couldn't hear anything but birds chirping obnoxiously.
I got her keys and decided to drive down into town to see if her four wheeler was parked anywhere. I drove for about 10 miles before I found the first establishment and saw it parked outside. It was a bar of course. I parked and walked up to the door. When I opened it and walked in everyone turned to look at me. I smiled awkwardly and spotted Dakota across the bar, sitting on some guys lap with her arm around his shoulder and a drink in her other hand. She was laughing and seemed to be really happy. I walked over too her and leaned against the bar. She looked at me with annoyance I her eyes. I took her drink and smelled it. It was vodka of course.
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
"I'm supposed to keep track of you, aren't I?" I replied.
"Is there a problem here?" The guy asked, wrapping his arm around her hip protectively.
"Devin it's okay. He's.. A frien-"
"Her body guard." I said interrupting her.
"Why the hell do you have a body guard, Darling?" He asked. This guy didn't seem to have the most sound character.
"My dad thinks it's necessary. I've created a racing reputation for myself, I guess." She said. She put her hand on his thigh and rubbed it up and down slowly. She was trying to make me jealous. I looked at her left arm and she didn't have her brace on.
"Where's your brace, Dakota?" I asked, getting angrier.
"I left it at the cabin. It doesn't hurt. God can't you just go back to the cabin? I'll be back before midnight. I just want to hang out with Devin. I haven't seen him in a year." She said.
"Yeah. I gotta get me some of this! Come on 'Koda let's leave." Devin said grabbing her butt and lifting her off his lap, walking out with her.
I hated to say this but I ran after them and grabbed Dakotas right arm and pulled her by me for a second. Devin stopped and looked at us.
I lowered my voice, "Dakota you were raped two days ago. Are you actually going to let him, "get some of that?" It isn't right. I'm supposed to protect you."
"Quit worrying and go home already. I can't believe you would think I'd do that. We're just hanging out. For god sake we're just friends." She explained.
"Do you let all of your friends touch you like that?" I asked, letting my temper get in the way.
"Go fuck yourself in hell, Jacob." She said and walked off with Devin.
They got in his truck and drove off.
I put her four wheeler in the bed of her truck and got in. I followed, keeping a good distance for an hour, then drove back to the cabin, seeing as they were just driving In circles.
Dakota's P.O.V:
Devin was one of my friends that I hung out with every summer that I spent up north. We had a fling last summer, but he tried to convince me to fuck with him in a lake on his parents boat. I got really upset and we made up, but that relationship ended a day later. That's when I met Riley and then they turned out just the same.
"Where we going, babe?" He asked.
"Hey hey hey. I'm not your babe. And let's just drive. Maybe go look at the stars when it gets dark?" We had drove around for a really long time and talked about our lives and how much they've changed over the last year and a half.
It had gotten a lot darker and we went off and parked in a field. We crawled in the back of his truck and laid down, staring at the sky.
"I love the sky." I said. "It's a bunch of tiny little worlds, billions of lightyears away."
"You know what I love?" He asked.
"What's that?" I said
"You."
I shifted uncomfortably.
"As a friend, right?" I questioned.
"Nope." He said taking my hand. I couldn't get the words out. I didn't love him like that.
"Devin-"
"Shhh." He said and got closer to me. He pressed his lips against mine and I freaked out. I pulled away and he looked sad.
"Devin I can't do this right now." I said.
"Hun, I know you just broke up with Riley but I promise I can give you everything." He explained.
"I just.. Don't think I'm ready yet. I'll think about it though. If you'll wait for me to sort out my mind?" I asked.
"As long as you need, Dakota." He said.
"Can you take me home now? Jacob will call my dad if I don't get back on time." I asked.
"Sure. Whatever you need." He said. I felt bad that I turned him down, but I felt something holding me back.
Who did I have feelings for? Definitely not Riley. Was it Jacob? I mean I did kiss him last night. And he does seem to care about me. And I treat him like shit. All I could think about was Jacob on the way back to the cabin.
"Are you okay?" Devin asked.
"Yeah. Sorry I just zoned out a little bit." I said.
"I can fix that." He said. He hit the gas and we went flying around the corner on what felt like two wheels." We were approaching another sharp turn and my heart was pounding. He reached down and grabbed this little black box.
He was doing a handbrake turn.
"What the fuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkk!!!" I screamed at we slid around the corner and off of the road. The truck slid down the slight hill we were on and crashed into a tree. I had slammed my wrists against the dash to try and support myself from the impact and my fractured wrist ached horribly. I cried out in pain and clutched my wrist.
"Shit. I didn't think that would happen." He said. "Did I hurt you?"
I nodded and held my wrist tightly to my chest.
"I'm so sorry." He said. "Should I take you to the hospital?"
"No. I just need to go home." I said. He put the truck In four wheel drive and got out of the ditch we were in. He drove very carefully to my cabin and dropped me off at the end of the driveway.
"I'll see you later." I said and he nodded and drove off. I walked up to the cabin and the light was on in the living room. I ran inside and saw Jacob siting on the couch on his phone.
I ran to him and threw my one good arm around him and sobbed.
"I'm sorry. Jacob. I was wrong. You were right every single time. I shouldn't have hung out with him. I should have worn my brace. I should have just listened. But I couldn't." I blurted out.
"It's okay. What happened?" He asked.
"He went off the road and hurt my wrist. He told me he still loved me. He kissed me and I panicked."
"Why did you panic? I'll get you brace." He stood up and grabbed my brace off the table and strapped it back on. I didn't answer.
"Dakota. Why did you panic?" He asked again grabbing the sides of my face so I was looking at him.
"Because I have feelings for you." I said quietly. My words barely audible.
"I have feelings for you too." He said.
