Chapter Three: Whatever the Hell We Want

Song: R U Mine- Arctic Monkeys

"Run, Tanner!" Finn ordered, pulling me by my hand behind him. We sprinted away from the cliffs, followed by Monty and Octavia. My chest burned from running while choking back sobs. I stopped, pulling Finn in the opposite direction he was running when I scream drifted through the air.

"It's Jasper!" I told him, clinging onto his wrist with both of my hands. "He's still alive!" We took off in Jasper's direction. If there was the slightest chance of saving him, we had to do our best to. We reached the cliffs and came to a screeching halt. "He was right there!" I said, looking across the river where the sign Jasper had held up triumphantly laid on the ground. The ground had no visible trace of Jasper being there. It was as if he had just vanished into thin air.

"Where is he?" Monty pondered.

"Whoever did this to him, they took him!" I concluded. Another one of Jasper's desperate screams made me cringe.

"We need to go back to the dropship." Finn decided, his hand on my arm.

"We need to get Clarke." Monty added. "If we find Jasper, she can help with whatever wounds he's gotten."

"You mean when we find him?" Octavia enforced, tears running down her cheeks.

"Let's go." I said in a shaky tone. I turned around and began heading towards the camp, wiping the mixture of tears and snot away from under my nose with my sleeve.

"Tanner, wait." Finn said softly, gingerly grabbing my arm to stop me. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." I lied and gently reclaimed my arm from his grip. "If we move fast we can get to camp and be back here by nightfall." I formulated.

We trekked through the forest. Differing from the chatter and conversation of the initial journey with Jasper, we were silent, unable to keep a cheerful atmosphere when what was on everyone's mind was Jasper bleeding out.

"Bellamy has a gun." Octavia shared randomly, no doubt in an attempt to break the silence.

"What?" Monty asked. "How did he get a gun?"

"I don't know." Octavia answered honestly. "Maybe we can get it from him in case whatever took Jasper--"

"He won't do that." I interrupted.

"If I ask him--"

"If Bellamy gives up that gun, he gives up the power. You really think he's willing to do that?" I asked Octavia, already knowing her response.

Octavia sighed. "We need to get back to camp."

...

I kept running, but Finn caught my arm, both of us out of breath. "Tanner, we're not gonna make it before dark." He told me, an apologetic look in his eyes.

"We have to keep going!" I argued, but Finn kept his grip on my arm.

"It's gonna be dark soon!"

"What does that matter, Finn?" Either way we're not safe, and stopping to set up camp just makes us an easier target!"

"What if we slept in shifts? Two slept while the other two kept watch and then we switch halfway through the night?" Octavia proposed. It was obvious she was still grief stricken, as was Monty.

"You need to rest, Tanner." Finn begged. "You barely slept last night. We still have eight hours to go."

"Fine." I eventually surrendered. Finn and I were on the first watch. It took them awhile, but eventually, Octavia and Monty fell asleep, Monty lying on his jacket, which he had rolled up into a pillow, while Octavia curled herself into a ball.
