Makeup! My savior.
I watch my face change to flawless with slightly to no effort and loads of help from makeup. You could almost not see it at all. perfect. At least I had a reason to cover my face with makeup. Other girls have less of an excuse.
I move the foundation brush to my chest and conceal the ugly mark above my left breast. I look into the mirror and sigh. No one has to know. EVER! These marks were my secrets to hold. They weren't for the world to know.
They didn't need to know that the heart pumping blood through my body wasn't mine. It belonged to some women who died similarly to how my family did.
They didn't need to know that my slight limp was because my right leg had medal in it and not normal bones. They didn't need to see the foot long ugly scar straight down that thigh.
They certainly didn't need to see the scar on my face. The one that ran along my nose and over my right cheek to end just above my cheekbone. They didn't need to know how glass attacked my face and fire burned my hair.
But most of all they didn't have to know about the images and sounds in my mind. The images of my father dead in the front seat burning. The sound of my screaming little brother as his clothing caught on fire. The image of my mother without a right arm. But the worst sound was silence and the worst image was blood. Because it meant I was alone.
The scars on my body were nothing compared to the scars on my mind.
