Church started at 6 pm. So that meant I was there at 5:45 pm sharp.
"Early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable." came the voice of my father, in my head.
I was always on time, even for things I wish I had never gone to at all. Like this.
I sat in my car, picking at my nails. Maybe I could just not go in and try to get away with it. I look up and see people walking into the large, Baptist church. I shook my head, I could do this. I flip down the mirror on my car's sun blocker and check my face out again. It looked the same as it did 5 minutes ago. Scarred.
I stepped out of my car and into the beautiful October air. It spelled crisp and a bit chilly. I wore over sized cloths to hide how I was wasting away underneath. I kept my head down as I walked around the church. I walked around the side without the side walk, hoping to avoid most of the chipper high school girls with blonde pony tales and matching notebooks with Bibles that have their names on them. I rounded the corner of the building.
That's when I saw them.
They rolled up in front of the church in a white Mustang. The front car doors both opened at once and out stepped two of the best looking men I'd ever seen in my life. The man driving was dark with a perfectly built, tall figure. He wore tight jeans and a plain white t-shirt. His hair was dark and perfectly spiked up in the front. His face was kind and his eyes were dark. He had light stubble on his face and he looked to be a bit older, maybe 30, I guessed.
The other man had blonde hair and a soft face. He was tall with serious eyes. He wore a black shirt with a white football jacket and ripped, tight jeans. He has this look in his eyes that seemed to mean trouble. But he was gorgeous. They both were.
I froze, not wanting them to see me. I let them walk in first and then followed.
At the door was a tall, thin red haired girl with dark rimmed glasses looking around. As soon as she saw me she came right for me.
"Are you Jess!" She said sweetly. She had a soft voice.
"I am." I say back, taking her now outstretched hand and shaking it.
"I'm Daisy." She shook my hand hard and smiled wide. "I am the youth leader's wife and I told your grandma I'd show you around." She looked so young to be married, she couldn't be much older than me.
Before I could say a thing I was following Ms. Longlegs down the long hallway to where the sound of lots of kids was coming from. We walked into a large gym where children seemed to be lining up in rows.
"They're playing a game. You don't have to participate." She says, "I believe they are playing dodge ball this week, quite brutal if you ask me." She points to the lines of kids. "They are getting divided into age groups. We have about 150 kids who come every weeks so we split them into two groups." She says, I follow her as we walk around the edge of the room to a different door. "From there the older group does small group and Bible memory first and games second and the kids do games first and the other stuff second. That way we can keep track of them all."
I nodded. We entered into a medium sized room with lots of chairs lined and pointed towards a small stage. On the far other side there were chairs made into circles and a random Foosball table on the far side. I also noticed that to the left of us there was a small kitchen.
There were some other people there, huddled together chatting and one man on the phone in the corner. I noted that I also saw the hot blonde stranger sitting in one of the circles of chairs alone, hunched over his phone.
"This is my husband, James." Daisy said, I look away from where I was staring at the blonde guy. I shake James hand. He seemed nice, down to earth. Looked like what I imagined a youth pastor should look like in this era. Skinny black jeans, button up blue shirt with white anchors on it and a man bun. His huge smiles was hard to resist. I smiled back.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Jessica." I shake his hand firmly.
"Jessica, welcome to First Baptist." He shakes my hand as hard as his wife did. "Your grandma speaks very highly of you." That meant that they knew about what happened with the accident. I shouldn't be surprised. Everyone seemed to know. I was the pitied, lone survivor or tragedy. " I am so sorry to hear about what happened with your family." he said.
What do you say to that. Well, I said what I'd been saying for three years, "Thank you."
Kids began filing in and taking seats. " You can sit on the girls side, Jess, and when the teaching is done you can join whatever small group you want. Or watch, whatever you're comfortable with." Daisy said kindly.
I took a seat in the back next the isle. Our of the corner of my eye I saw the handsome blonde get up and walk over. He walked past me to the boys side and sat next to two younger boys one row in front of me. He was so handsome. I could feel my breath catching and I hardly noticed anything around me but him. I also didn't seem to notice that he was turned around until it was too late. Our eyes met and I felt a huge knot in my stomach. I looked away, heart thudding so loud I was sure everyone could hear. I took a huge breath, not realizing that I had been holding my breath. I glanced back and he was looking forward but he had this evil grin on his face. This time when he turned back around I looked away quicker.
What was happening. I moved down a couple seats as a few girls needed to get in the row. As I scooted over I could no longer see him. I gulped again.
Then if things couldn't get any worse I got a tap on the shoulder. I turned and looked into the eyes of the dark handsome man. I suddenly had a hard time breathing.

Hey All! I'm back....after like a few years. Thoughts I'd start things up again.
