In The Maze

Chapter 6

    My eyes flutter open. I lie there for a few seconds until sudden realization struck. Rosalind. She's gone. I sit up, freaking out. I look down to see Newt sleeping with Rosalind on his chest. I exhaled in relief. I don't remember holding my breath. I look at Newt again. He looks so peaceful. His eyes open and he meets my gaze. For some reason that gives me butterflies in my stomach. "Morning." He says in a raspy morning voice. " Good morning." I say. "How'd you sleep?"
He smiles. " Do I really need to answer that?" He says tiredly. I giggle.
    "I'm going to go take a shower." I say. " Can you watch Rosalind?" He nods. " But who will guard the door for you?"
    " I'll go ask Minho." I say. " It's still early, he doesn't need to be in the maze for awhile." He nods in agreement. I start to get up and he closes his eyes. " You might want to change her Diaper." I say. His eyes widen and I laugh. I dig through my bag and fish out my brush, a bar of soap, and shampoo and conditioner. I stand up and start searching Minho.
    I find him sitting by himself at a picnic table, munching on an apple. " Hey Minho!" I call. His head snaps up and he spots me, he waves. "would you mind guarding the door while I shower?" I ask. " Sure." He says, tossing the apple over his shoulder. He follows me to the shower, and waits outside the door. "Hello?" I call out, making sure that nobody is in here. I check all the stalls and no ones there. Today I'm going to put some effort into my appearance, I decide. I wash my hair and scrub face and body with soap. I look down at my legs. I decide that next time the box comes up, I'll ask the creators for a razor. I sigh, it'll do for now. I turn the shower off and grab my towel off it's hook. I start drying myself off. Shuck! I thought. I forgot my clothes. I toss my dirty clothes in the hamper, and wrap my towel around myself and open the door. "Minho, I'm done. Thanks again."
    " No problem." He says. He runs off, probably to finish his breakfast. I walk back into the showers and retrieve the rest of my stuff, and start walking back to Newt.
    " Hello love." He says with his familiar English accent. He sits with Rosalind in his lap, she has a clean diaper on and is wearing a new onesie. "Hey." I say. " I forgot my clothes, I'm going to change. Don't look, okay?" He nods and goes back to tending to Rosalind. I grab undergarments with a random outfit and I duck behind the tree and change. I finish changing and slip on a pair of socks and my sneakers. My hair is completely dry now, and it hangs down in loose waves. I notice it's a little longer then when I first arrived, a little bit below my jaw.
" Do you guys have haircuts around here?" I ask Newt, curious. " Yeah." He responds.
"They say I'm the best at giving them."
    " Huh." I say. It's interesting. I'm awakened from my thoughts by the smell of freshly made pancakes and syrup, wafting over from the kitchen. " Newt!" I say. " Breakfast!" He nods and I take Rosalind from his arms. I give him a peck on lips. He looks at me, surprised. " What was that for?" He asks, his cheeks now red. I just smile. We go get breakfast, me bouncing Rosalind on my hip.

Newt's POV:
She kissed me. It was just a peck, but it was still a kiss. I still have butterflies in my stomach. " What was that for?" I ask, curious. She just smiles and starts walking towards the kitchen. I follow with a goofy grin on my face.
I go to bed, still thinking about the kiss. I watch Emalee zip herself into her sleeping bag and place Rosalind on her chest. Rosalind relaxes immediately and starts dozing off. "The hut will be done soon." I say. "Then we can sleep in there."
"Yeah." She agrees. " Goodnight, Em." I say.
" Em?" She questions.
"yeah. You don't like it?" I say. " I love it." She whispers in the dark. " Goodnight, Newt." She says. I roll over in my sleeping bag. "Goodnight, Em." I then mouth to myself in dark,
I love you.
