Gasping for breath, Maya awoke to a hammering pain in the side of her face.
"Shit!" She scrambled to her feet, pushing away the creature that had struck her. But, deciding that it was the best way to deal with the monster, Maya dropped to the floor again and knocked it off the stumps that were once its feet. Pinning its arms with her knees, she detached a throwing axe from her belt and brought it down on the abominations throat. With a final jerk, she separated the head from the body, just as she received a spasmed kick in the back from its so called leg.

"Damn Crawler. You should have stayed dead." Maya cursed, trying (and failing) to wipe a foul blue substance off her blade. This was the forth time in a row this had happened, and she was getting used to it. She looked out the window and saw the sun was just rising from behind the wreckage that was the world.

"Another day living, another day closer to death." She spat, glaring at the Crawler on the floor. Maya strapped her axe to her waste again and scooped down to start dragging the Crawler out the door.

"Ellie, wake up, you idiot! Busy day ahead!" She shouted, slamming the door on the 'body'. Hearing no sounds from the other room, Maya sighed and went to wake her up her partner. Quietly, the door swung open, revealing a very cramped and dirty room and a very cramped dirty boy, sleeping on a pile of dusty blankets. He looked like a stray dog: skinny, blotchy and with a lot of matted hair.
I probably don't look much better, Maya told herself.

A fly whispered in her ear as she smiled down at her friend. His ash blond hair flopped onto his face, which were both covered in grease. He had so many freckles it was hard to tell what was grime and what wasn't. But a strange glow radiated from his features, which wouldn't diminish no matter how filthy Ellie became. His brows creased as he flinched in his sleep, again like a dog which was having a nightmare. His lips pinched together as he started to sweat and thrash. Maya grabbed his shoulders to shake him out of his terror.

"JAAACK!" He shot upright and reached out a hand infront of himself.
"Hey, shhhhhh, its OK. Your safe." Maya gently took his shaking hand and placed it back on the makeshift bed. He looked at her with a panicked look on his face, which began to fade as he looked at her. Letting out a deep breath, he sighed a 'morning'.
"Come on, time to get going," she said, knowing he wouldn't appreciate her asking who Jack was.

Carefully, he got up, stretched and grinned shakily at her.
"Well? Lets go get some breakfast!"
