Brace For It.

Chapter 2: Missing School

"Nothing." Ellie sighed. He kicked over the bin, receiving a glare from Maya.
"Do you want to be found, Ellie? We haven't survived this long to die because you're too loud." Maya grumbled. Sinking to the floor, Ellie put his head in his hands.

"Ugh. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but... I miss going to school." He groaned. Maya laughed bitterly.
"Remember when it first happened? You thought it was a joke. You thought Oskar and Harry were just messing around. Until we saw their guts."
Forcing a smile, Ellie continued, "I thought we were all dead. Do you you think we're the last ones left?"
"I don't know." Maya whispered, thinking about her lost friends.

"How did we even end up together?" He broke the silence after a few minutes.
"We were the only ones willing to fight. Everyone else was eaten or ran."
Giggling, Ellie continued to reminis about school, making Maya feel quite nostalgic. She still didn't know if her family was alive. Finally bringing up the confidence to ask, Maya was about to speak when a commotion snapped her out of her trance.

"Crap! Maya!" Ellie called, backing up as three Walkers approached. Immediately Maya grabbed her axe , but decided she needed her knife too, this time. Standing by her side, Ellie was wielding a metal pipe and carving knife like a bewildered butcher . They had worked together so long now, that they didn't need to discuss tactics, they knew each others moves.

"Hey, Hey, Hey! Walkers! Over here!" Ellie shouted, managing to get the attention of two Walkers and leading them in the other direction. Maya was left with the last one. She kicked it to the ground and stomped on its face. It looked like mouldy broccoli, but smelled ten times worse. Crouching down, Maya set about severing its neck, for that was the best way to kill them.

Suddenly, a thrashing arm hit Maya in the cheek. She screamed out in pain and rage. Blood dripped from a deep cut in her mouth, caused by her horrible braces. Swooping down, she detached the head. She stood back up and spat blood on the mangled body.

"Why; why do I still have braces?" She breathed. Panting she went to help Ellie. He was still drawing the Walkers in random directions, not letting them touch him. Locking eyes with him, he forced the Walkers to turn their backs on Maya. She jumped into a sprint and swung her axe at the closest monster. It connected at its neck, spraying a disgusting blue liquid on Maya, as it fell to the floor. With one final swing the creature was dead and there was only one Walker left, which Ellie already had on the floor. He finished it of quickly and returned to Maya's side. Back to back they watched, waiting to see if anymore would come. None did.

After a few minutes they stopped circling and looked at each other, still slightly out of breath. Ellie noticed Maya bleeding mouth.
"Maya, are you okay?! What happened?! Did you swallow any goo?! Please, don't tell me your going to become one of them?!" Ellie ranted, in obvious panic.
"I'm fine, Ellie! It just hit me in the face and my braces caught my cheek." Maya finished quietly, her voice obviously portraying her frustration. Ellie gave her a sympathetic look.
"We have to do something about them, Maya... We could try pliers..." He trailed off, realising how bad his idea was.
"What?! No! Have you never read the Gone series, Ellie?! Braces don't work like that!" They paused, thinking of options. "The only thing we really can do, is try and find an orthodontist."
"Maya, that's impossible! Out of the fraction of people who are still alive, how many do you think are going to be orthodontists?" Incredulously, Ellie asked, his tone slightly sarcastic.
"There's no point in arguing, Ellie! It's the only option we've got! And we aren't doing anything here! It's good to keep moving!" Maya whisper yelled, hoping not to be heard. He sighed. "Alright. Fine. We'll try and find an orthodontist."
