The day after the beloved setter's funeral, Hinata had convinced himself that he would stay home and wallow in misery for just 'one more day'. That is, until Nishinoya and Tanaka passed his house on the way to school.
Tanaka knocked on the door, and soon after Hinata's mom answered the door. The two boys asked if it would be OK to try and get Hinata to come to school, and she gladly let them attempt to get the small boy out of his house. After some struggling and protesting, Hinata reluctantly got dressed and walked to school alongside Noya and Tanaka, not bothering to get his bike.
"Oh, Hinata! You're here! Feeling a little better?" Sugawara asked as his teammates walked into the gym, a volleyball pressed to his hip by his arm. Practice had already ended yet again without the short spiker being a part of it, so Suga could take a guess at the answer to his question. He felt it was a good idea to ask anyway though; the team needed to show support to each other more now than ever.
"A little better, I guess." Hinata admitted. "Getting out of the house and seeing you guys is refreshing", he smiled a little and stretched his arms over his head. He wasn't nearly as enthusiastic as usual, but he was getting there, slowly.
"Does that mean you'll be coming to practice after school then?" Daichi walked up behind Suga, pushing a cart full of volleyballs. Suga set the volleyball he had in his hands into the cart.
Hinata was about to protest, but he could practically hear Kageyama's voice yelling 'HINATA! You dumbass!" just at the thought of skipping again. "Sure, I'll come." Hinata agreed.
"RAAUGHHH! THE TINY SPIKER HAS RETURNED!" Tanaka yelled suddenly, everyone unaware he had heard their conversation.
"OI RYU! ARE YOU CALLING ME TINY?!" Noya yelled from the other side of the court while putting away the net.
"NO! I WAS CALLING HINATA TINY!" Tanaka defended, still yelling.
"BUT I'M SHORTER THAN HIM! THAT MEANS YOU'RE SAYING I'M TINY!" Noya reasoned... still yelling.
"SHUT UP!" Daichi yelled at them so they'd stop their pointless screeching. Tanaka and Noya got scared and left for classes, Yamaguchi and Tsukishima trailing behind them.
Eventually, the rest of the team changed out of their jerseys and left for classes as well, Suga trying to keep Hinata awake with some small talk. Hinata said his goodbyes to the team and slowly walked from class to class, each one seeming to last an eternity. He was kinda excited to get back to playing volleyball, though. He didn't realize how much he had missed it.
The spiker sat up a bit when the last bell rang, and he quickly made his way down to the gym, bumping into a few people (and apologizing) here and there. As the wind blew across Hinata's face on the short walk out to the gym, he was surprised to find that he was the first one there. Probably because my last class is the closest to the gym today... He thought.
Hinata had been wearing his Karasuno jersey all day, because it was comfortable and he didn't care to search for better clothes that morning. He slipped off his sweater and put it on a bench along with his bag, and grabbed a volleyball from the storage room that the previous class had left unlocked.
He tossed the ball a little and slammed it against the ground, only for it to hit the wall and the cycle repeats itself. Hinata began to remember the feeling of the ball against his hand that he had missed so much. The feeling that made him feel all Gwwaaahh! when Kageyama would set to him and he'd put all his force into the jump and swing against the ball.
But now, Karasuno only had one setter. Sure, the official setter was an amazing team player and was very caring and compassionate towards his team and the sport, but he just wasn't the same. He didn't have the same super-fast tosses that would utilize his speed and jump to the max. It just.. wasn't the same.
'Hinata!' The small orange haired boy couldn't shake the voice of his closest, and farthest companion.
Slowly, his thoughts drifted off of volleyball and just on to Kageyama. The days they spent practicing together, and stopped to get buns after, and sometimes Kageyama would stop at Hinata's house to work on homework, and that one time when he actually stayed the night and-
"Wow, you're eager." Ennoshita commented as he stepped into the gym. Directly behind him was Tsukishima, Yamaguchi and Noya. Soon after Tanaka ran in screaming something about Kiyoko, and everyone else slowly made their way into the gym. However, they were still missing a certain team captain and official setter.
About 10 minutes into practice, said teammates finally got to the gym looking a little out of breath and flustered. Probably because they ran to get to practice.
"Sorry we're late!" They apologise in unison, still out of breath.
"Finally! What were you guys doing?!" Coach Ukai called from across the gym. He had been throwing tosses for the team in place of Sugawara setting.
"Uhh..." Daichi put a hand behind his head and seemed to search for words as a few heads turned. Suga just looked away, his face flushing more.
"W-we were helping my art teacher clean up after our clay sculpting!" Suga quickly told everyone, and the team mostly accepted the lie and went back to practicing.
"Suspicious..." Tsukishima smirked, and Yamaguchi laughed.
"SHUT UP YOU TWO!" Daichi yelled at them.
The rest of practice seemed rather normal, other than the fact that they were missing a setter. At first, Hinata was a little uncomfortable without his genius setter, but he soon warmed up to Suga's tosses and got back in sync with the team.
Even after Hinata was playing better and better, and having fun again, he couldn't shake the voice of Kageyama yelling to him. The setter was gone, but Hinata could hear a tiny voice in the back of his head.
Eventually, practice ended and everyone pitched in to put away the nets and balls. For once in a long time, Hinata was quite tired, but oddly refreshed after practice. After saying goodbye to the team, he walked part of the way home with Tanaka and Noya.
Eventually, he bid his farewell to them too, and walked down the street where it was usually him and Kageyama. But, even so, no matter how loud that voice in his head was, Kageyama was gone, and was never coming back. Hinata shoved his hands into his pockets as a cool wind blew a few leaves across the street.
"I'm back!" Hinata yelled into his house as he walked in and slipped off his shoes.
"Welcome back! How was school, Shouyou?" His mom called from the kitchen.
After some thought, Hinata replied "Pretty good." making his mom smile.
After stepping over some toys that Natsu had left in the hallway, Hinata dropped his bag on the floor in his room and fell onto his bed. In that moment, he finally felt at peace. Hinata took a deep breath in and out, letting all his emotions, worries and recent depression fly away with it. His lately developed feelings for Kageyama calmed down, and his heart stopped retching in pain at the thought of never seeing his best friend again.
Hinata sighed, and decided he wanted to take a nap.
He wanted to, yet he couldn't.
Suddenly, thoughts, voices, pictures, scenes all rushed into his mind. Each and every one was somehow related to Kageyama. He tried to shake the thoughts, but all that came with that was more yelling of his name, all in the setter's voice.
Hinata dragged an arm up and covered his eyes.
"Shut up."
The voices got louder and more frequent.
"Shut up!"
"H-Hinata, wake up you dumbass!"
"SHUT UP!"
Then, he was in a white room.
