Chapter 1 : Voice In The Dark

My bare feet slowly glide above the icy floor. Slowly I step down, toes first, then the heel. Slowly. As if i'm on top of thin ice. I try not to make a sound, not the slightest. The whole building is asleep and I would prefer getting to my bed without waking up anyone.  A dull yellow lamp on the old wooden cabinet is the only thing lighting the way through the deep dark hallway.  I pass the lamp now and I can see the shiny knob to my door. I reach to it without caution, actually with haste as if I don't want to be grabbed by whatever can lie in the darkness behind me. The fear turns into relief as I turn the cold knob and feel a cool breeze arise from the inside of my room.

"Sam", I hear a voice say. My head shifts around as quick as my heart begins to race.

"Sam". This voice, it sounds so, familiar.  Almost as sweet and soothing as my...

I feel my hip hit against something. Realizing the lamp in the hallway, I look down to see I hit the cabinet the light emits from.

As I exclaim my voice, the end of the hall way becomes, brighter. A shadowed figure outlines the hallway, but not as to reveal where this voice is coming from.

"Sam what are you doing up?" This time the voice comes from behind me. I turn.

The voice belongs to Emily, holding a lit candle, eyes hardly open.

" What are you doing?", she asks again.

"I was staring at the stars Emily, that's it. I was heading to my room but then..."

" Just tell me in the morning Sam, it's way past bedtime and I need to get up early."

"Okay."

I start to head back, then think about the voice, but when I turn the outlined figure is no longer at the end of the hallway.

Chapter 2: Starring at the Stars

Emily came into my room this morning. Obviously wondering why I was up so late at night.

I just told her about the stars. How every year on a night like last night, I go out onto the roof and stare at the stars.

" Why so Sam?", she asked.

I had to put together everything to explain myself. She knows about what happened that night, but she never heard it from my side. So, I explained everything.

"They came out of no where, I was already across the street when they passed by my parents. All I heard were loud noises. I ducked my head but by then it was over."

"Oh Sam.", says Emily in sympathy.

"I wanted to know what happened, so I ran over just to see them..."

Emily must of noticed the tears coming down, because she stopped me there, gave me a hug and calmed me down. After that, she just changed the conversation to things like about what's been going on in the orphanage and how tired she is at the end of the day. She kissed my forehead and said bye, everything she usually does when I talk about sad stuff.

I didn't get to explain how I was afraid, how I ran and how I came back when it was too late.  So, I didn't get to explain about the stars. She doesn't know what they mean to me. She doesn't know that those stars, where the last things I saw in my mother's eyes.
