I nod when Kurtis tells me his name. "Come on." He says "Let's get out of here." I pause, wondering if I should follow him. "I don't know you, I don't know if I can trust you." I say. Kurtis turns around and says "Okay, I know I came off rude and aggressive, but trust me, we have to get out of here, who knows when the next attack will be?" My heart sinks. "Next attack?" I ask, my voice is small and trembling. "Y-you mean there's going to be another attack?" Why would there be another attack? I ask myself. "Yes, those people that attacked us want everything left of this village gone." Kurtis replies. "But almost everyone is dead already, why would there be another attack?" Kurtis looks over at me. "The attackers want every last person in this town dead, that's why." I feel tears streaming down my face again. Damn it Callie. I think to myself. I hate crying in front of other people, I feel like an idiot whenever I do. Kurtis puts his hand on my shoulder and asks if I'm okay. I nod, wipe away my tears and fake a smile. "Yeah, I'm fine my eyes are just really watery." Kurtis nods. "Sorry for being a jerk earlier, I have trust issues, that's all." Kurtis looks at me apologetically. "It's okay, I understand."
