Chapter Twenty One

Simon

I had given up on Jamie. I had tried my hardest, but it was all in vain as she didn't want me – she wanted Darren. I had tried to stop myself from thinking these things, I had tried to convince myself that I was going to beat Darren and Jamie and I were going to be together.

But then she had this make over, and I couldn't believe it. She had decided – for some unknown reason – that she wasn't beautiful and had to change bits about herself that didn't 'fit in'. Little did she know that these were exactly the bits I loved about her. They made her different and an individual. The only bit that I liked about her new makeover (sure, I liked the other bits, but they weren't necessary, really, were they?) was that streak of blonde in her usually brown hair. It made her out of the ordinary – she wasn't the same as anyone else. And that was sexy, in my opinion.

So I went to the stupid leaving party for Darren and Robbie, even though I hardly ever spoke to Robbie, and I hated Darren's guts for being my competition. I mainly went to tell Jamie I wanted to be with her, and...

Oh, I don't know! I had no idea what I was going to say to her, because every time I tried to tell her how I felt, she'd talk about Darren, and that was the mood killed – I couldn't talk about it after that.

I sighed as I thought about Jamie kissing Darren. The game was up. He had won. I no longer cared.

"Hey," said a soft voice to my right.

"Hi," I replied, not turning to face her. I didn't know what I could possibly say to her to make me feel positive about this situation.

"So... did you see me earlier?"

"No, I missed seeing you and Darren full on kissing on the dance floor." I asked, sarcastically, turning to face Jamie.

"Look, Simon –"

"You don't have to explain, Jamie, it's okay. I get it. Darren's always been in your life, and he always will be. Whatever. I don't mind."

"No, I don't think you understand," Jamie told me. "I kissed him, sure, but I realised that I don't love him. I thought I did, but I don't. I love someone else, and I can't believe how long it's taken for me to realise it."

"Jamie, what are you saying?" I asked, slowly, hardly daring to believe she was going to say what I think she was going to say.

"I love you," she said, solemnly.

"I love you, too," I replied.

Jamie grinned, and then we kissed, and I've never been so happy in all my life.
