Chapter 10
The next few days were all about planning for the break-in. Cameron made sure we went over everything, down to the littlest details. I could tell that he still thought I was going to back out or that I wasn’t serious about the whole thing, but each day that went by without me backing down he seemed to realize just how serious I was.
The first problem came about when Sadie found out. I knew that if we told her she would want to be involved, but it was just so risky. Risking my own life was something, but if I had to be worrying about her as well I would be more than a little distracted. Distractions are things you don’t need when trying to pull off a serious crime without getting caught.
That’s why I brought Sadie to Cameron, so that he could tell her about the plan. I knew that there might be just a little less arguing about being involved if he was the one that told her no. And I knew he would tell her no. He would use the same argument that he used with me about not risking her life and all that. I just hoped it would actually work on her because it wasn’t very effective on me.
“Just tell me what’s going on! It’s driving me insane,” Sadie whined staring back and forth between Cameron and me. He looked at me and I nodded for him to go ahead.
“Kay and I have been talking about a plan for getting me out of here…,” he starts and then goes on to explain exactly what we have been talking about down to every last detail. She doesn’t say much while he’s talking, but I can see the accusatory glances she keeps sending me out of the corner of her eyes. Looks like she’s blaming me for not telling her sooner.
“So, you’re going to break into the town hall?” she asked, eyebrows raised higher than I even knew was possible.
“Yeah, pretty much,” I replied and she gives me another weird look.
“We could actually use your help, Sadie,” Cameron told her and I turned to him in surprise. He was supposed to tell her she couldn’t be involved if she asked not ask for her help! What the hell is he thinking?
“My help?” Sadie questioned, her eyes unreadable.
“If you wanted to I was thinking you could be a lookout for us while we go in,” Cameron suggested.
Seriously? So he argued when I said I wanted to do this, but then he just flat out offered Sadie to join in without her even asking? That was really confusing to me and I have to say I took it kind of offensively. Maybe he trusted her more than me or something. I felt a twinge of jealousy at this thought and then quickly suppressed it. I didn’t want to feel that way, not even a little.
I turned my focus back on Sadie just in time to notice that something was really wrong. With how Sadie had been acting about the whole Cameron thing, I fully expected her to jump right on board with our plan and insist on being part of it. The look on her face, though, was making me second guess this assumption.
“You’re insane,” she stated flatly and then rose to her feet with a stony expression on her face.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, slightly worried.
“What’s wrong?” she repeats while giving me an incredulous look. “So many things are wrong with this, Kaydance! You of all people should see that!”
“Sadie, I don’t understand. I thought you wanted to do something and would be excited about the plan! Are you mad because I didn’t tell you sooner? Because I was planning to, but I was just worried about you. You understand, don’t you?” I begged a little desperately.
I never saw her look the way she did right then and it scared me so much. I had the sudden fear that I was going to lose my best friend without even knowing why. Sure, I expected her to be mad about me not telling her, but this seemed to be a lot more serious than that.
