We finally made it back to HQ, and Rivielle was with the lightly wounded soldiers at the infirmary, reading her picture books to them and coloring on a soldier's cast, which the soldier didn't seem to mind. Her babysitter was visiting someone and kept a close watch on our daughter.
The soldiers chuckled as she read a book to them about a puppy named Spot that chased a red ball across his backyard and she made little yipping noises in place of the barks.
"What does the little puppy do when its momma and daddy gets home from Trost?" The brunette soldier with a broken leg and now colorful cast asked in a deep, masculine southern voice.
Riv whirled around, dropped her book and tackled my legs. She then flew across the room like a bat out of hell and tackled her father, managing to knock him down to the floor.
Levi let out a grunt as he hit the tiles, and a few soldiers laughed.
"Daddy!" She squealed.
I picked her up and set her on my hip.
"You've been reading to all these nice soldiers?" I asked, making myself seem surprised. "I bet they loved that."
"Yeah, and I drew some pictures for them!" Riv smiled, showing off the gap between her teeth where she lost a front tooth.
"You did?" I asked, interested. I absolutely loved it when Riv drew. She showed academic interests then. Levi hated it when she colored out of the lines or got marker stains all over her hands, but he did take her age into consideration and suffered in silence.
"Yeah! I drew you and Daddy and uncle Erwin and Auntie Hanji all together!" She said happily, showing me the picture. Tiny stick figures and several much taller stick figures adorned the page, and two of the tallest figures had leashes on them, extending all the way down to whom I assumed was Hanji.
"And you must have been playing football, too," Levi said, getting off of the floor.
She grinned. "Uh huh. Estelle taught me how to tackle!"
Levi snorted as he looked at Riv's drawing, then rested his head on his left hand, his arms partially crossed as he stood. His wedding band glinted in the sunlight.
"Apparently titans are pets. Lovely."
"Can we get a pet, daddy?" She asked.Beg would be a better word.
Levi looked appalled. I knew what he was thinking. Fur. Shedding. Muddy paws. Litter boxes. Clawed up furniture and curtains. Messes. Noise.
"We could get a fish, Levi. They're quiet and clean," I suggested.
Levi sighed. "Alright."
