I quietly made my way to where Natsu and the crew were being held again, keeping my steps light on the stone staircase to avoid possibly alerting anyone of my approach. When I reached the foot of the stairs I found that the guards were asleep, slumped against the walls, as I expected.

I shook my head and crouched down, taking the key from the loop attached to one of their uniforms. I unlocked the door and and the second I got inside I saw that all the chains had been broken and there was a large hole busted in the wall. A few members of the crew stood about the room while Natsu stood in the gaping cavity in the wall and I dropped the key from my hand, making a small metallic thump as it collided with the stone floor.

"How did you..." I murmur the words and look around. Natsu laughed quietly and walked over to me, grabbing my hand.

"I will explain later, for now... we should go because we have company!" He looked at the door I had just come through and sure enough the guards where awake and calling for backup. Then they raised their crossbows and began firing even though I was in the room. Natsu shoved me aside and suddenly his fist lit on fire and as he dodged the arrows he ran straight for the guards. I scrambled to my feet, moving towards the hole in the wall where I could see the drop to the water below.

In seconds I surveyed the scene to see guards charging into their boats to try and stop Fairy Tail from setting sail from where it was docked nearby. The crew was scattered about in the water and I could hear the crossbows firing, the high-pitched shriek of the arrows slicing through the air echoing about the canal.

I looked back and saw Natsu take an arrow in his arm, while a few other crew members, Cana, Jellal and Droy rushed to his aid. Jellal and Droy pulled Natsu back after knocking out a few of the guards and they leapt out of the room, yelling at Cana and I to do the same. I met Cana's resolute gaze with my own terrified one.

"Let's go, before more of those minions show up to ruin the fun," she shot me a smile before grabbing me around the waist and without warning, leaping into the waters below.

It's cold. That was the second thing that I registered, right after the most important thing: breathe! I pushed myself to the water's surface and looked for Cana. She was three feet from me, looking towards some guards, perched above us on the castle walls, who's crossbows where aimed right for us.

"Lucy! Submerge, you're too visible!" She yelled to me.

"What about you?!" I countered and she looked over her shoulder.

"I'm your first line of defense, besides I'm just returning the favor. You saved us with that move of yours," she gave me a quick smile, the typical drunk of the crew was now as sober as one could be. "These bastards are gonna pay for messin' with us." More arrows started raining down on us.

"What can you do?! You're down here and they're way up there, you have no weapons!" I felt desperation clinging to me as an awful feeling pitted itself in my stomach.

"I'll use a little miracle," as she said that a soft glow came from beneath the surface and she pulled out some cards from beneath the water, flinging them at the guards. There where flashes of light as she yelled but at the same moment there was a large explosion behind us. I turned to see ships in the Royal Fleet in shambles, burning in the waters.

"Cana!" I called for her before ducking into the water to narrowly avoid an arrow. I resurfaced, looking for her in the darkness.

Her arm was raised above the surface when I spotted her, and her tattoo on her forearm was glowing. "Gather! O river of light that's guided by the fairies! Shine! In order to perish the fangs of evil! Fairy Glitter!" She chanted and a large beam of light shot up into the sky. The guards seemed to vanish with the blinding light and I guarded my face with my arms as a large shockwave ensued.

"There, problem solved," she muttered as the light faded she and started swimming towards me and the ship. I also began moving, but suddenly without warning more shrieking began and along with it I heard a gasp. I turned to Cana and see arrows are lodged in her back, right in her spine. I quickly grabbed her and pulled her with me, but I soon realized she was loosing consciousness.

"Lucy... tell Natsu... I'm sorry for disobeying orders... Though I'm sure this time," she heaves a breath, "he'll make an exception."

"Hey, don't talk like you're dying!" I keep swimming forward, my aim on the ship.

"I'm so glad I met you... Lucy. Please take care of everyone...for me, okay?" Her voice was faint.

"Stop talking, you'll waste your energy," I tell her, growing closer to the ship and I feel a warm fluid seeping from her wounds.

"I'm sorry," she sighs and she falls silent. Her body seems heavier and then I realize she has stopped breathing.

"Cana? Cana! Cana!" I shout and try and shake her awake but she's limp, blood pooling around us in the salty canal waters. Tears spill from my eyes as Gray swims to me and pulls me from her, my hand clinging to her purse which slides off her, leaving her floating with her hair sprawled about around her head. Her body bobs slightly with the waves and her eyes stare blankly at the sky above.

"No! We can't leave her like this!" I scream and cry. Gray is silent as he carries me aboard the ship and he runs to Natsu's room and sets me in there before closing the door and disappearing. I hear arrows lodging themselves in the woodwork of the ship as I sob, clutching my knees to my chest. I still had blood on my hands and clothes and I felt dirty when I looked at her bag laying beside me.

"Lucy," the door opened and shut again and I looked up to see Natsu. The noise had ceased now, and I only heard the ocean waves and distant shouts. His clothes where scorched and the arrow was missing from his arm. A bandage was in its place. He kneeled beside me and pulled me against him, neither of us caring about the state of our clothes or bodies. I cried against him, not knowing how to deal with such a sight.

"How did this happen?! Why?" I sob. Natsu doesn't reply, he just strokes my hair gently. "She's gone, she died in my arms." I feel myself shaking.

"She died a noble death Luce, she was protecting the people she cared about," he murmurs into my hair. "We couldn't ask for a better way to die than that."

"What about dying happily?" I murmur.

"Most of us never dare dream of that Lucy. It's almost impossible," he tells me. I don't respond, and both of us stay silent, thinking about our fallen comrade. I also think about the spell she cast, Fairy Glitter. I think about Natsu and his fire abilities, and how quickly building went on Mirajane's home.

That's the reason happiness is near impossibility for them. They aren't just pirates.

They're mages too.
