When I lifted my head, opening my eyes, I was met with the sight of the open beach. I look back to see that I had been laying on the scarf Natsu normally kept around his neck. I lifted it up as I sat up completely and looked around. I saw the remnants of a campfire, and at that thought I jerked in the direction of Mirajane's house. It was blackened in some spots but it wasn't completely destroyed. I sighed and looked forward again, seeing the ship still out in the waters.
The crew was scattered about on the beach and I saw Mirajane still resting a few feet from me. When I looked myself over I saw a bandage on my leg where I had been cut but it was nothing serious. My dress was slightly torn along the bottom so I reached down and ripped off the skirt to where it was to my knees. I took the extra material and stuffed it in my bag which happened to be sitting nearby with my sword.
Then, carefully, I pushed myself onto my feet. I stepped away from the tree line I had been resting in and a soft wind tossed my hair to the side. I didn't mind the wind and I just kept walking slowly towards the water, enjoying the warmth of the sand beneath my noticeably bare feet. My boots where back by my bag, but I held Natsu's scarf in my hand. I glanced around the general area and didn't spot him right away. I stopped moving when I reached the water's edge, and I stared out over the waves.
"I feel like I am missing something," I say softly to myself.
"Why do you feel that way, Lucy?" Mirajane's voice behind me startles me. I turn to her and give her a faint smile.
"There are so many unanswered questions I have about Fairy Tail, about Natsu, about..." I move my hand as I search for the word.
"Everything?" Mirajane asks as she steps up beside me, and I take in full sight of the bandage around her head. I nod to her.
"Yeah," my voice is quiet. "Everything. I have one you might be able to help me with..."
She looks at me. "What's that?"
"Why did Natsu seem so sad at the mention of mermaids?" I ask her slowly. She is quiet for a few moments.
"I had a younger sister, Lisanna. What a gentle little thing she was. Natsu and Lisanna, well...they were in love. Madly so. They could hardly leave each other's side. Natsu even proposed to her," she stopped to heave a soft sigh. "But then my sister was captured by traffickers. We searched relentlessly but turned up nothing. Natsu was devastated, but then his Captain perished and he had to step up for everyone." Mira tells me with a faraway look.
"Does he still love her?" The words are quiet when they leave my mouth.
"Well, I suggest you ask Natsu himself. I am sure if you ask him when the moment is correct he will answer your questions," Mirajane tells me.
"And if the moment is wrong?"
"Even then I am sure he would tell you. But I am sure he will also have plenty to ask you as well, Miss Heartfilia." Icy fear runs through my chest.
"What?" I ask nervously.
"There is no need to hide what I already know. To think I wouldn't recognize the daughter of Jude and Layla. I may be stuck on this island but I am not out of the loop you know," she gives me a sweet grin. "Oh, and Natsu is around the bend in that rock wall over there, in the small cove," she tells me before strolling over to Erza where the two begin chatting. Erza even hugs Mirajane for longer than a minute and I blush when she kisses Mira's bandage. Looking away I head in Natsu's direction and tie Natsu's scarf around my waist.
As I walk I hum softly to myself. I get to the bend in the rock and stop walking, taking calm breaths. Then I slowly peer around the edge of the rock to see Natsu sitting on a small ledge in the tall cliffside's surface. It wasn't far off the ground and easily accessible. He had one knee up and an arm was propped up on it. I walk around the rock face and into the privater beach with Natsu.
"Hey Luce, how are you feeling?" His voice startles me slightly as it breaks the silence.
"I-I'm feeling okay," I say as I walk towards him. "What are you doing?" I reach him and I'm standing just below the ledge, looking up at him.
"Thinking," he looks down at me with a small smile.
"About what?" I ask and before answering he reaches down to me and when he starts pulling me up I instinctively jump to help him. He lifts me onto the ledge and his arms drift from under my arms to around my waist. He holds his scarf which was tied there for a moment before releasing it.
"A lot of things." We fall quiet after he answers and I resist the urge to lean back into him.
"I was talking to Mirajane about you before I came here." I tell Natsu to break the silence.
"And what about me, exactly?" His breath brushes against the skin of my neck and shoulder.
"You and Lisanna," I tell him, rather bluntly. I felt him stiffen at the mention of her name.
"Lisanna?" His voice is quieter as he says her name.
"Mirajane told me that she was taken by traffickers...and she mentioned you being in love with her," my heart was racing. Jealousy had made a home within me, and its partner in crime—guilt—had settled over my heart.
"She was the center of my universe," he starts talking after a heavy silence and I wasn't sure if I had wanted him to speak, or if silence would have been better. "I was lost in my love for her. She was the ocean while I was nothin' but a ship exploring her waters." His voice sounded extremely pained as he spoke.
"I imagine she must have been an amazing girl to capture you like that, Captain." I spoke in a hushed tone, not wanting to say these words. Every part of my being was screaming at me to stop before I traversed too far into territory that was far too dangerous for my heart.
"She was. I would bring her back if I could," he sighs and I feel the breath rush across my skin yet again, but it no longer feels warm.
"What if you fall in love with someone else?" These words where my string of fate, my only tie to hope. I had feelings for this man, that I could no longer deny.
"I'd still want to bring her back. Other people loved her too. Everyone misses her."
"Have you fallen for someone else, Natsu?" I turn and look back at him. He was staring ahead, avoiding my eyes.
"We should get back to the others. I need to check on the crew," Natsu avoids my question, and he moves to get off the ledge. After he does so he reaches up and helps me land gracefully in the sand. "Get on my back, I'll carry you," He crouches down.
"A-are you sure—?"
"Luce, I wouldn't offer if I wasn't sure," he chuckled. I climb onto his back and wrap my arms around him. I smiled as I enjoyed our closeness. My eyes drifted to watch the shoreline as he walked towards it. The water gently lapped at the sand and rocks, and as I looked over the horizon I wondered what the mermaid, Lisanna, had been like.
When we round the bend in the rock I see Erza and Mirajane sitting together. Mira was laying with her head in Erza's lap and they where laughing and smiling. Levy was talking to a tall man with long black hair, and a woman with darker blue hair. Gray was helping Laxus haul in fish, and groups of people where scattered about the shoreline.
"It seems everyone is enjoying themselves..." I murmur and Natsu nods in agreement. "We will start rebuilding Mira's house soon. And then we are leaving. I'm not keeping you here when someone knows about the island," Natsu tells me.
"Where will we go?" I ask him.
"We're gonna meet some friends. They'll help us with our plans," he shifts and sets me down on the ground.
"What plans..?" I put my hands on my hips.
"That's a secret, but you'll know when we think you should. Now come on, food will be ready soon!" Natsu grabs my hand and he flashes me a grin before pulling me towards the rest of Fairy Tail.
