That One Sunset

Then, the ultimate horror: the bell sounded.

Students swarmed through the halls, only having two minutes to get to their next class. Even for a demon, who could not be seen, I still couldn't float through walls. I had to push past everyone who was headed my way. Of course one of the students had to fall, causing a domino effect that knocked down everyone.

"WHY?!?!?" I screamed. I'd finally figured it out. How could I have been so stupid? They obviously knew my sister, and she'd tell them my name, and I'd completely disappear.

After a teacher had escorted the injured student, the hall slowly started to empty. It had cost me ten minutes. I sprinted past the classrooms in session, with teachers yelling at kids not to push each other.

I turned left, running by the principal's office. Poster boards lined the halls, showing off projects the students had done. I bursted out the door, feeling the wind hit my face. I spotted Annika and Luna only a couple blocks away. Looks like they didn't get too far, good.

As I ran across the street, I noticed that they were facing me. They were walking toward me in fact.

"No, they couldn't have!" I muttered. I couldn't remember where I'd lived, so I was hoping to be able to catch them.

As soon as Annika spotted me, she ran, dragging Luna along with her.

They'd found my name.

I could easily outrun them, being as I don't breathe. Quickly, I sprinted to one of the trees. I climbed as fast as I could. They'd look like idiots if they were shouting at a tree.

"Come down, Myra." Annika shouted. Without my permission, my body jumped from the tree, landing on my two feet.

Luna just looked puzzled. She heard me land and had felt the ground shake, but there was nothing visible.

"Myra, you tried to get me to die. Why?"

My mouth started to speak, "I'm a demon. It's my job."

Everything was happening without my brain giving the okay. As long as she knew my name, she could get me to do anything.

"Your sister told me." Annika said quietly, "When I brought the crash up she couldn't stop crying. The only thing audible was that she hoped you were in a better place."

It stung. This was the only real pain that I'd felt since then. My sister had wished for my happiness and here I was taking other's souls.

I tear slowly fell from my eye.

"Just do it. It's what she would've wanted." I told her.

"I can't..." Annika whispered.

"What do you mean? You talked to her, right? She probably couldn't do it, but I tried to take your soul!"

"Don't you get it?!?" Annika screamed, "I'm Veronica Rose! After you died I couldn't cope. Mom and Dad sent me away to this other family because they couldn't take care of me anymore. They fought for hours without end, all because of you!"

It was possible. Annika, Veronica. Delarosa, Rose. They were similar.

"Then answer me this:" I said quietly, "Who was my best friend when I was three?"

Annika paused, thinking, "I was. You couldn't make friends."

"Correct." I whispered, "How about when I broke my leg?" I asked angrily. This girl couldn't be my sister.

"You were at the park near the library. It was around four. You were climbing on the blue monkey bars. You still had a scar for a while on your right leg, but you broke your left leg." She said as she stared at me.

It was true. I'd never told anyone about that since I was too embarrassed of my scar. I still had to ask her one more question to confirm it.

"How old was I when I died?"

Her green eyes quickly saddened, "You were fourteen. It was your birthday. I was just coming over to the school to see where you were when you got hit. One second you were find, the next there was a growing pool of blood beside you."

Exactly. Now that she'd said it I could picture it clearly. The sun was setting in the west, it's remaining colors dancing on the indigo sky. It was quiet, there were no sounds to be heard. I had been carrying my bright blue bag on my back as I crossed the street right near the school. Even though it was only around six o'clock, the sun had already started to set. I had decided that I should start to make my way home.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the lights of an oncoming car, only speeding up as it got closer. I still remember the expression of the driver, the horrified look on his face when he saw me. Oddly enough, it felt slow. I could feel the exact moment when the car hit me, pushing my body further until I was completely knocked down and swept under the car.

The car above me had started spinning, and shattered my leg as a wheel drove over it, the same one with the scar. The last thing I would ever see was the indigo in the sky pushing out the light of the sun. Soon enough I had blacked out, hearing the sobs of my crying sister.

I leaned against the tree, sighing, "Please Veronica, just end it for me."

"I V-Veronica R-rose," she whispered, shaking, "c-command you, M-Myra R-Rose t-to..." she paused, not wanting to say the word.

"Trust me, please. It'll be better for me." I assured her.

She fell to her knees, her long blond hair crashing to the ground. Her tears came one after another, rolling down her face and dropping off onto the ground.

Then, looking up at me, her green eyes staring at me she said, "To die."

Suddenly I felt like I was that fourteen year old girl again, looking into the lights of an oncoming car. With that same dumb expression plastered on my face, like all of my worst nightmares had come true.

I looked down at my hand, it had started to fade away. I could see through it to see a bright blue flower. I was just a shadow, following the human world through the years. The void of nothingness I had become was going to just disappear.

"Thank you." I whispered. I shut my eyes, trying to hold on to that one memory, the one beautiful memory I had owned: that one sunset.
