"It will be fine feather kit! Don't worry, they won't know we're gone, mum's sleeping so she won't suspect anything." Fox kit stamped her paw "why would you worry we're just going into the forest!"
"Exactly!" I stood up straighter.
"Feather kit!, imagine if we caught a Mouse, they would me so amazed, everyone will want to be our mentors!" Fox kit argued. I think for a while, I do want the best mentor, but what if something goes wrong, it is the forest after all though I've only dreamed of taking paw steps on the bed of damp leaves that lines the forest floor.
"I guess, but still only at dawn." I mew,
"It's a deal!" Fox kits face lights up with happiness. I've done the right thing, I think to myself and feel a huge smile stretch out across my face.

I dodge as an outstretched paw whips past my face. I feel the weight get heavier as fox kit presses me to the ground. I push my paws into her soft stomach, I feel her muscles tense up, and another paws swings past my face, this time connecting with my cheek. A flash of pain travels through my skull before I give an angry grunt and spin her around she lands with a thump on the grass, where we are outside the nursery. I release my grip on her shoulders and flop down on top of her. We both explode with laughter and tumble down the hill. The flowers and soft grass gives us the perfect cushioning. We laugh clinging to each other until we reach the bottom of the slope. We come to an abrupt halt. I look up to see fire star, he has a stern look across his face. I sink into the sandy clearings floor and try to make myself as small as possible. Then warmth fills his face and a wide smile stretches across his cheeks. He flops down on us knocking my breath away.
I Yelp in surprise, I hear foxkit exclaim, "what was for?!" Fire star hauls himself up. He pelt is spiking up at different angles and he has grass clinging to his back. I turn around to see sandstorm sitting on top of the hill we just rolled down. She has a smile spread across her face as she asks "what are you crazy cats up to?" Fire star looks up,
"I don't really know" he says laughing. He then bounds up the hill with a few powerful leaps to sit next to sand storm. She shouts something to us "time for bed kits, you've had a big day"
"Awh, but it still isn't dark" fox kit moans. I plant my hindquarters in the ground as if to say, I'm not going any where! Sand storm comes down the hill and picks a fuming foxkit off the ground, foxkit kicks her legs and swings her tail but sand storm seems to have a strong grip on her. Fire star walks down to me and lunges for my scruff "I can walk! I can walk it's fine," I quickly mew. I get to my feet and bound up the hill. From the nursery I can hear foxkit arguing with our mother. I look behind me to the bottom of the hill. Fire star stares back at me,"good night dad" I mew
Good night feather kit" firestar replies and I turn away to the brambles that incase the nursery.

I awake to a sharp paw in the stomach. I Yelp, but foxkit has her paw across my mouth, making it muffled. She mouths "out side, forest remember?" So quietly that the camps heavy breathing almost drowns it out. The thought comes flying back to me. Of course, the forest!! I leap up with excitement but slowly make my way to the nursery entrance. The brambles scrape my back as I crouch under its entrance. Fox kit and I emerge into the cool night breeze. An owl hoots in the trees and crickets sound creating almost a night orchestra. "We have to head out quickly before the dawn patrol catches us" fox kit mews.

We start towards the entrance making sure the tread carefully. It seems like hours before we reach the entrance. Whenever we hear a noise we crouch down in case someone sees us. Finally we reach the protective bramble wall. I don't have to duck under this one like the nursery entrance.

The smells of the forest enter my nose. The damp wet leaves under my feet, I look up to see the tree trunks merge into one green canopy. I squint, trying to make out the end of the forest, but it just seems to keep on going! Dew droplets seem to have found refuge on the leaves. We lurch forward into a run. The trees pass as a blur beside me, I can hear foxkits paws drumming behind me. Suddenly I come to a stop, something is odd, there is less greenery here. We barely made it anywhere before this abrupt halt. I walk forward to see that the ground drops away into a ravine. I look down curiously, my heart still drumming from the run. Foxkit leans over beside me. "The clan cats must make it over some how." She mews. "Well we will only find out," I say as I reach my paw down, finding a rock. I put my other leg down.  "I guess we climb then" I say to foxkit. At that my legs lurch out from underneath me and I find myself tumbling down the rocks. The rocks send shooting pains across my body and I'm pretty sure one of my legs is strained. I reach the bottom with a moan. I look up to find that I haven't fallen very far and the ravine wasn't to deep. The fall felt like forever though. Foxkit stares down at me with concern. Although her expression changes when she gives a laugh "look before you leap" she gives a smug look, "at least I got down here faster" I retort.

We finally make it to the top of the ravine. My body seems to have recovered, my leg still aches though. Through a lot of falling back down and scrambling back up we finally got there. "Remember we have to go back again" foxkit says, as we trudge along, "argh don't talk about it" I groan. We pad through the forest. The sun has come out now and the birds are singing. "The dawn patrol must be almost done now" I mew. "Let's get a move on then" foxkit starts running. I have no choice but to follow her.
