Jealous

'I'm jealous of the rain

That falls upon your skin

It's closer than my hands have been

I'm jealous of the rain'

Ross stared at Max and his girlfriend Melanie. They were outside, laughing in the rain. They had been dating for a few months now and Ross had to hide his love for his best friend Max. It was very difficult. The two lovebirds laughing didn't help.

'I'm jealous of the wind

That ripple through your clothes

It's closer than your shadow

Oh, I'm jealous of the wind, cause'

Ross had to turn away as he saw Melanie reach up to kiss Max on the lips. It was like something from a movie, their wet clothes clinging to them in all the right ways, raindrops hanging off their hair and eyelashes and them ignoring the world in favour of each other. Ross just wished that that was him and Max.

'I wished you the best of

All this world could give

And I told you when you left me

There's nothing to forgive'

Ross had actually thought that he and Max had a chance. The day he had decided to tell Max his feelings Max had introduced the offices to his new girlfriend Melanie. She was beautiful, funny and sweet. Exactly the kind of person Max deserved.

'But I always thought you'd come back, tell me all you found was

Heartbreak and misery

It's hard for me to say, I'm jealous of the way

You're happy without me'

He had hoped that maybe Melanie and Max would break up in a few weeks but here they were 5 months on and still going strong. Ross wished it was him making Max happy but he wasn't it was Melanie.

'I'm jealous of the nights

That I don't spend with you

I'm wondering who you lay next to

Oh, I'm jealous of the nights'

He liked to pretend that Max and Melanie didn't cuddle together every night but he knew. She was there in the morning and although he could tell they hadn't had sex he thought he'd actually prefer if they were. At least that way he could play it off as a hook up type thing not an actual romance.

'I'm jealous of the love

Love that wasn't here

Gone for someone else to share

Oh, I'm jealous of the love, cause'

He was jealous of Melanie. She got to spend time with Max and say that Max was her boyfriend. Ross wished he could say that about Max but he couldn't.

'I wished you the best of

All this world could give

And I told you when you left me

There's nothing to forgive'

He knew he should be happy for Max. Melanie made Max happier than he had been in a very long time. She was able to make Max smile when Ross couldn't.

'But I always thought you'd come back, tell me all you found was

Heartbreak and misery

It's hard for me to say, I'm jealous of the way

You're happy without me'

That didn't mean he had to like the relationship between Max and Melanie. Melanie was in the way of him dating Max. He couldn't handle that.

'As I sink in the sand

Watch you slip through my hands

Oh, as I die here another day

Cause all I do is cry behind this smile'

Ross pretended he didn't cry every night that he knew Melanie was with Max. He pretended that the sight of them together made his heart ache to the point he thought he might be dying. Sometimes it felt like dying might be easier than this.

'I wished you the best of

All this world could give

And I told you when you left me

There's nothing to forgive'

Max had thought that Ross didn't love him. That was why he had decided to date Melanie, so he wouldn't have to face his feelings for Ross. It didn't help, it just made him feel worse. He wanted Ross to be happy and not have to worry about him. But in his twisted way of doing that he had managed to make Melanie fall for him. He felt like he was being a terrible person to her.

'But I always thought you'd come back, tell me all you found was

Heartbreak and misery

It's hard for me to say, I'm jealous of the way

You're happy without me'

What made him feel worse was that he knew that he would give up Melanie to be with Ross, if only for a day. It wasn't fair on Ross or Melanie but it was how he coped with it.

'It's hard for me to say, I'm jealous of the way

You're happy without me.'

You're in love with him, and he's in love with you, and it's like a goddamn tragedy, because you look at him and see the stars, and he looks at you and sees the sun. And you both think the other is just looking at the ground.

(A/N: So this story was set to the song Jealous by Labyrinth, it's a really beautiful song you should definitely check it out. That last paragraph about the sun and stars thing is from something I saw on the internet I do not know where it is actually from.
