Chapter Five

“What’s happening out there?” My father questioned.

“They crave the smell of blood. They want a massacre. They are angry. If you had heeded my advice earlier it wouldn’t have progressed this far. The guards have got it fairly under control, but that doesn’t guarantee they won’t do this again. They aren’t just going to go away. They want to see a change. They don’t have any money, or homes, and if they do they are just shacks. The money anyone has is basically worthless now.   Our army can’t hold back the invaders coming at us from all sides any longer. Face it Romulus, it will be over before we even know what hit us if we don’t change things.” Augustus reasoned. I couldn’t believe how nonchalant he could act when his master’s wife was carrying his baby.

“But what if we don’t have to actually fix all of these problems?” Augustus looked at my father like he had three heads. Maybe he thought my father finally had gone crazy.

“I don’t understand sir. You have to look out for the people. You can’t just ignore it. They will keep coming back. “My father stroked his chin.

“If what they really want is bloodshed, why don’t we give them it? They act as if these problems don’t exist when they have something else to occupy their time, and what’s more entertaining than a fight? We could have an arena in which there are gruesome fights to satisfy those blood thirsty savages. We’ll even throw in some free bread. With their stomachs full, and their minds entertained at the arena, not even a fleeting thought about the problems will pass. “That was when I stopped seeing him as my father, and for the devious, evil person he truly is.

“You are brilliant.” Augustus complimented, and this one time I didn’t feel like hiding in the safety of the shadows any longer. There are two kinds of evil in this world, the people who do evil things, and people who watch evil things happen and do nothing about it, and I didn’t want to remain in the latter for one more minute.

As Augustus exited to tell the others I knew this would be my one and only chance, so I’d better not take it for granted. I pounced on him, grabbing him from behind and cupping my hand over his mouth to muffle any screams that may escape. He whimpered and squirmed underneath me as I dragged him to my room. I have to say he wasn’t very strong at all. When I reached the doorway I threw him to the floor.

“What do you think you’re doing?” he asked frightened. I took a step forward and he flinched. Figures. He made a move toward the doorway behind me.

“Oh, you’re not going anywhere.” I exclaimed. I quickly surveyed the room and spotted a piece of cloth that would have to do to tie him up, just so that he wouldn’t run away.  I tightly bound his hands without second thought.

“Did you really think you would get away with it?” I asked.

                “With what, madam?”

“You can cut the act. I know all of the things you’re hiding.” I said through gritted teeth, placing my hand on my hip to look more intimidating.

“Do you?” He smirked. “Because it seems to me that you took me here for a reason. And you must want something from me, and what else could you want if you don’t want information.”

“I don’t want information. I want to stop you.” I countered. He burst out laughing on the floor.

                “Sorry darling, but that’s impossible.”
