Chapter Seven
“Are you ready?” I asked Marcus as I crept to the front bars of the cell. The bronze was cold against my skin as I rested my arms on it.
“Yes. It’s all up to you now.”
“That’s not helping.” I whispered back in a harsh tone. He chuckled behind me. As I approached the guard I stuck my finger through the space between the bars and tapped on his shoulder. He turned around to look at me with a full body suit of armor covering him.
“I was wondering if maybe I could… be let out for a while.” I requested, trying my best to seem as charming as possible.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that for you.” he countered.
“Are you sure there’s nothing I can do to persuade you.” I questioned, smiling up at him.
“No, there isn’t anything. I’m under strict orders to keep you down here.” My palms started to warm. Maybe this wasn’t such a good plan after all.
“What’s the matter? Are you too afraid of a weakling like Augustus?” I taunted.
“Of course not.”
“Yeah, I’m not too convinced. I bet you couldn’t even take me.” I challenged.
“Yes I could.”
“No, I don’t think so.” I continued.
“Get out here and I’ll prove you wrong.” he answered while unlocking the door. I guess the urge to protect your manhood conquers common sense. As I slithered between the wall and the gate and through the small opening he had made. I felt a little bit nervous that Marcus wouldn’t hold up his end of the deal. How would I know if he just escaped and left me with this bafoon?
Before my reflexes could even react to what was happening, a sharp blow penetrated my gut. I fell to the ground, clutching my stomach in anguish. The guard towered over me with a look of triumph on his features. I somehow found the inner strength to drag my feet up from the ground. This time I was prepared for the next punch he threw. I dodged it without hesitation and punched his chest. He staggered back. All the while I was wondering why Marcus wasn’t there yet.
“It’s a terrible mistake you’ve made, hitting a girl, and I can’t bear to see this go on any longer.” Marcus remarked, coming out from the shadows that he had been buried in earlier. The guard hurled a few sloppy punches at him, but he was no match for Marcus. With one kick the guard was down on the ground. He kicked him a few more times, and the guard grunted defeat. He was finally knocked out, and probably would be for a long while. I breathed a relaxed sigh and winced as my stomach was still very tender.
