The vet started Caspian on treatment and he was also hooked up to a drip to keep him hydrated. I returned home feeling miserable not knowing what was going to happen to him. From the vets expression, I could see it was serious.
The following morning, the vet surgery called mum and told her that Caspian had a disease which puppies pick up when they are still not fully immunised. We were told that recovery is not always successful. I kept my faith in Caspian and prayed every day. I went to see Caspian every day after school.
He looked so miserable but I kept talking to him, telling him that he is the best puppy in the world and my best friend. One afternoon, dad arrived home earlier than usual. He didn't look his joyful self. He looked miserable and hung his head when he saw me. He whispered that Caspian had to be put down.
It did not register me at first. I just stared at dad. What had he said? It could not be happening. Dad again repeated that Caspian had to be put down. I ran to my room and cried and cried thinking that this was just a bad dream that I could not get out of.
I pinched myself a few times to see if I was dreaming. Deep down, I knew that it was not a dream, but reality. My mind went to the beach from the taste of my tears and my thoughts went to the wonderful summer we had spent together and how happy he made me.
I knew that I would never, ever forget him and how lucky I was to have spent time with him. I said a prayer for him, knowing that his soul would go to heaven. My parents came into my room and hugged me and told me how sorry they were and that they would too miss Caspian.
They said that Caspian was a very brave pup who fought till the end but he was suffering too much and a desicion had to be made.
I have just been given another pup, two years after Caspian passed. Part of me was very excited and another sad. I still think about Caspian and how brave he was and how he was the best pup in the world!
