Chapter 3

Her head felt as if it was exploding, regaining its shape, and exploding all over again, her heart was slamming against her chest, and her vision was too blurry to realize where she was. “Do you think she is going to be alright?” she heard a calm and sweet voice speak. “I don’t know, she was hurt pretty bad” another deep voice said, when suddenly she felt a strong pain on the back of her head, making her wince, which diverted the attention of other people from their conversation, since they stopped talking. “Honey, are you okay?” the same sweet voice asked, lifting her head onto something soft, she attempted to respond, although it ended in vain, she swallowed the lump of saliva left in her dry mouth and tried again, “I… It hurts” she replied, with a torrent of tears spilling out of her eyes. “Don’t worry my child, everything will be okay” the sweet voice said, wiping her tears, as she opened her foggy eyes. She looked around, what seemed like a simple bedroom and at the mid-aged woman with dark hair and warm brown eyes and a guard who was standing next to the wooden door, which had a rose carved on it. She attempted to speak up again “Where am...” but stopped because of the aching pain that shot throughout her body. “ You are in the King Zaroff’s Palace” the sweet lady replied, when suddenly a rush of fear spread all over her body, “No…” She whispered, “I can’t” as tears resumed running out of her eyes and her throat started burning. “Hush sweetheart” the woman said, hugging her as her hands encircled her back in a soothing way, “Nobody will hurt you, everything will be alright, I promise” the woman whispered in her ears, and then she pulled back, and gave her a warm smile, making her respond was a smile as well, as she ignoring the tears that spilled out of her eyes. The woman’s words almost calmed her down, but she knows hope was the last thing on her side, and then her smile disappeared as the wooden door was shot open. She was right; hope was the last thing on her side, and the first and last thing she remembers is a pair of familiar blue eyes getting locked with hers.

“No!” I shouted, sitting upright on my bed. Déjà vu. But this time, I had a lump in my throat, and my eyes were burning, as I felt drops of sweat scatter towards my eyebrows. I took three deep breathes as my mother had instructed me when I had nightmares when I was young. I looked around, and saw Anne sleeping in a purple sleeping bag, which looked similar to my pink one. My eyes searched for some water to quench my thirst, but there was none, so I decided to go to the kitchen, ignoring slight pain in my back. Then I remembered that Anne and I started studying calculus, yeah right. We were gazing at constellations and making shapes and then probably drifted off to sleep under the blanket of stars.

I darted downstairs towards the kitchen, took a glass and poured water into it. As I started drinking, the cold water filled my body, calming me down as my lips felt less dry.

I turned to look at the door, trying to remember my nightmare this morning, and suddenly my mouth dropped at the sight of the door, ‘Impossible; I thought, and unknowingly, the glass of water slipped through my hand as the water got spilled with shreds of glass scattered throughout the kitchen floor.

“Honey, are you okay?” a voice echoed through the hall outside the ajar door, and I quickly recognized it, “Yes Aunt Rebecca, I just dropped water, I’m cleaning it up, no need to worry” I said loud enough for her to hear from the other end of the hall. “Ok Sweetie, I’ll just go and wake Anne up, otherwise you both will get late for school!” Aunt Rebecca said, when suddenly, another voice was heard from upstairs “Don’t worry! I woke up! It isn’t really that difficult to wake up when you hear a glass shattering and two people shouting at the top of their lungs!” Anne said, “Sorry” Aunt Rebecca and I said simultaneously, as I picked up a broom stick in order to clean up my mess. “Why are you all shouting? We aren’t in the Retirement house, you know” Uncle Ben said, with his glasses on his head, coming out of one of the many rooms they had in their mansion. Yeah, he is a famous entrepreneur in our town, and my aunt is a manager of our town’s bank. Go figure. “Sorry Uncle Ben” I mumbled, “Oh don’t worry sweetie, I was just messin’ with ya kids” he said, picking up the news paper from the lobby’s table, “honey, where are my glasses?” he asked, looking at Aunt Rebecca, as I started giggling, “Whats so funny?” he asked, “I have been looking for them all morning” he said, in a tiring tone. “Honey” Aunt Rebecca said, crossing her hands, “Yes?” he asked, turning towards her, “you’re wearing them right now” she said, in a serious tone, as she changes her posture by putting her hands on her hips, while Uncle Ben moves his hands along his blonde hair, until they reach her reading glasses, “Oh. Sorry” he said, chuckling, and we all started laughing. “Okay, I better go get dressed!” I said, as I hurried off towards their large staircase, as I finished cleaning up my shredded pieces of glass.
