It had been three days since I had applied for the editing job and I hadn't received a reply. My days usually consisted of going to the coffee shop opposite, ordering ice tea because the caffeine in coffee makes me go crazy and it gives me the shakes, and spending time on the internet, on tumblr or YouTube. I had come across some channels that I had fallen in love with, I had a real soft spot for Danisnotonfire and AmazingPhil. I was jealous of the beauty gurus who looked amazing all the time. Classes didn't start for another couple of days so I had a lot of time on my hands. On this particular day, I received the email I had been waiting for.
'Dear Isobel Stewart, you're work is very impressive and we would love for you to be part of our web series, Storytellers, we would like to arrange an interview with you on Friday at 2pm at Starbucks. It will be a casual interview to decide whether you are right for the job. We look forward to meeting you. Yours sincerely Joey Graceffa, executive producer'
It was Wednesday so I had two days to prepare for the interview, the email said it was a casual interview so I didn't have to spend a ton of money on new clothes, which was good because I had spent all my money on a new computer.
Friday came by quite quickly. I got up late which always meant it was going to be a bad day. I had planned on getting up at 10am to give myself enough time to get everything sorted for the interview, instead I got up at midday which gave me 2 hours. I had stayed up until 4am, on the internet because I got distracted in the weird part of YouTube which is full of videos of cats doing human things. I jumped in the shower and washed my hair. I dried my hair and tied it up in a high ponytail, I never wear my hair down because it gets in the way, I pulled on a dress that I had bought years ago. It was a knee length and fit my body shape well. The rest of my clothes were really baggy and made me look like a bag of potatoes, which isn't flattering. My skin wasn't a problem, so I just put concealer under my eyes, because I had very noticeable dark circles from a lack of sleep, I put on mascara and a tinted lip balm. It was my everyday makeup, I wasn't going to experiment with a crazy new look. It took me 20 minutes to cycle to the Starbucks where the interview was. I was nervous, my palms were sweating and I had a knot in my stomach. I was never good at meeting new people, I got scared that they would look at me and instantly dislike me, I'd never had real friends. I had the people that I thought were friends but actually just wanted to be friends with my siblings. It was understandable because my siblings were perfect, they looked like my Mum, skinny, blonde hair, sky blue eyes and I looked like my Dad, fatter, dark hair, brown eyes but I got the creativity. My siblings couldn't sing or film a video. But they could speak four languages and knew all the square numbers. We never got on, we were more like strangers than siblings.
As I approached the coffee shop, I noticed a man stood outside. I recognised him but I didn't know anyone in LA so I couldn't have known him. I parked my bike and stepped into the coffee shop. I didn't know what the interviewer looked like so I awkwardly stood looking around until the man from outside stood up "Hi, are you here for the interview?"
"Oh... Yeah, Isobel" I put out my hand for him to shake
"Joey Graceffa" he took my hand and shook it "Let's sit down" We sat at a small table in the corner "Okay, so have you had any experience in editing before?" He asked me and I answered, he continued to ask questions until the interview was over. We got on really well, he was funny and cute which made things easier. "You don't remember me do you?" He asked me as we were leaving.
"Umm... Well.... I recognise you, I don't know where from. Should I know who you are?" I sounded so rude when I said it and I instantly regretted it
"We met at the airport in England, you were staring at me"
"Oh I do remember, I thought I was going crazy for a second. Also I was people watching not staring"
"Is there really a difference?"
"Yes, staring is boring. People watching is a lot more interesting, I come up with lives for the people"
"So what was my story?"
"Oh, I didn't come up with one for you because-"
"Because you were staring" he interrupted
"No, I just didn't"
"Oh right" We were now at the place I had parked my bike "I'll let you know about the job, but I'll let you into a secret, page 6 isn't very popular"
"Oh okay, well I hope I see you again soon" I got onto my bike and rode away, Joey turned around and walked in the opposite direction "1....2...." I whispered to myself "3" I looked behind me and sure enough Joey was looking at me. I giggled and waved to him, he waved back. I really hope I got the job, I wanted to get to know Joey better. We could be great friends.
