Kyle's P.O.V

I walk past three members of my dad's pack on my way to his office. He got his Beta to call me there earlier. Wiping the rouge blood on a towel I grabbed from the kitchen on the way, I figure I look okay enough to see him. My dad is harsh to everyone except me and mum, Luna.

They met when they were at college at a party one night. Dad said he claimed her right there on the spot. Ew, Dad, ew.

When I meet my Mate, I'll take over as Alpha of this pack and my Mate will be Luna. I've been doing little jobs for my dad for a few years now to prepare me, like killing the rouges on our territory and attending meetings and stuff.

I'm just waiting on my Luna now. I know she'll be amazing.

I get to my dad's office and knock softly at the door before walking in. He's sitting at his desk talking to James, the Beta. They stop when they see me, and James steps back but doesn't leave the room.

"Hi, you wanted to see me?" I start. Dad laughs and motions for me to sit in the chair opposite.

"Yeah, about an hour ago." He rolls his eyes. "Been out?" he looks down at my bloody hands.

"Just a few rouges hunting in the forest. Nothing much." I shrug and dad smiles to himself, rolling his eyes.

"You and your hunting tactics." He shakes his head and leans back in his chair. "Anyway, we have some great news. Ethan has found his Mate." Ah, now I get why James is in the room, his son found his mate.

"Who is she?" I ask. Ethan is a few months older than me, so I'm not jealous or anything. In a few months if I haven't found my mate I might feel jealous, but I'm proud of him for now. He's always been a little on the shy side, although straight to the point as well.

"She's from the Ash Feather Pack, not a Luna or anything, but that will just make her transition to our pack easier. Her name's Cath. You probably don't remember her from when you were little. Ethan called us earlier, and her parents have invited us over to dinner." He pauses. "You're coming." Ash Feather Pack... that sounds familiar, but I can't place it.

"Why do I have to go? Ethan's not related to me or anything." I sigh, leaning back in my chair.

"You're like brothers. He would want the support. Also, there's a new member of our pack now. Since you'll become Alpha soon, you need to really get to know everybody. The Ash Feather pack will become great alliances with us because of this match." I rake my hands through my hair. I hate these dinners, they're always so awkward and there's never anything to do.

"When?"

"In an hour. Wear something nice." He states. I stand up and glare at James.

"I bet this was all your idea." James shrugs, a smirk playing on his lips. He's about forty something with jet black hair and a buff chest. James has always been like an Uncle to me, or a second dad.

"I only have this pack and my son in mind." He says seriously, but still smirking. He knows I hate this. I roll my eyes at him and close the door to dad's office, heading to my room. Once there, I take a quick shower, washing the smudged rouge blood completely off my hands and running shampoo through my hair.

Then I dry off, shoving on some dark jeans and a grey shirt. Done.

I lock my bedroom door so no members of my pack can get in. When we were younger, we used to pull pranks on each other. I've locked my door ever since they flipped all my furniture upside down one time back home in New York.

That was just after we moved to New York the first time. Before then, we lived a three hour plane ride away in New Orleans.

Shit. Now I remember where I know the name Ash Feather Pack from.

I used to play every day with a girl called Peyton from that pack. We used to play together all the time with Ethan and... Cath? Wait, Cath is her sister... so she might be at dinner...

Stop screwing with your mind, Kyle, she won't be there and even if she is, she won't recognise you. I tell myself, even though I hope it's not true. I can't believe it didn't click before- I haven't spent a day without thinking about her for the past ten years.

I wonder what she looks like now- if she's changed since I moved away.

It's been a decade you idiot, of course she's changed!

Wow, I'm stupid sometimes. Shaking my head at myself, I make my way downstairs where my parents and James are already waiting. His mate, Ava, was killed several years ago in a fire. James looks proud and happy, how I hope my parents will look when I find my mate. I pull on some shoes and we all walk out to the car.

My wolf, Vic, is pretty quiet. We killed over ten rouges earlier in wolf form, so he doesn't want a run right now, for which I'm glad. This is my favourite shirt.

We drive for about twenty minutes before pulling up outside a house in an estate. It's a red brick building, with probably about four or five bedrooms.

I kick a stone with my shoe as we walk over to the front door and mum rings the bell. Not twenty seconds later, the door is opened by a cheerful woman with blonde, flowy hair. She looks about my mum's age, and she has slight laugh lines around her eyes.

"Hiya! It's so good to see you again!" she smiles. "You probably don't remember me; I'm Monica."

"I remember you crystal clear, Mon!" Mum squeals, hugging Monica, who squeals back. I smile and act happy to be here. Monica leads us all through to the hall where a man who I can only presume is this Cath's dad walks in. Everyone starts talking and greeting each other.

"Kyle! You've grown so tall!" Monica shouts reaching her hands out for a hug. When we pull back, Ethan strolls in with a small blonde under his arm, rubbing circles on her back. James is the first one to greet them, with a huge smile and a 'welcome to the family'.

I say hello to the blonde, whose name is Cath, and stand back to watch everyone smiling and being happy. Then, the most amazing scent I've ever smelt hits my nose. It smells like roses and strawberries, but no one else seems to notice it. I start looking round to find the source of it, walking a little away from the stairwell and sweeping my eyes over the small tables lining the hallway. I even look in the living room, but I can't find it.

When I turn back, she's standing there. Peyton is slowly stepping down the steps, sniffing the air around her subtly. And she smells like roses and strawberries.

I wonder if she remembers me after all this time. She's obviously a lot taller and mature than she used to be, and beautiful, too.

Mate.

Vic growls. I raise my eyebrows in surprise. There's no way...

Go touch her if you don't believe me, doofus. You should've learnt to trust me by now.

My wolf says again. I walk slightly forward, towards the girl as she takes the last few steps down and stands on the hallway floor, looking around in front of her. I lightly graze her shoulder with my hand, feeling an eruption of sparks. She stands completely frozen.

"Mine." Vic rumbles.
