Genesis

Genesis looked around, and shook the red dust from his pelt for the thirtieth time that day. He sighed inwardly, and walked over to the little miniature canyon where he knew there was a pool of water. There was a broken water pipe, and some dog had dug a hole there. You could drink from the hole on top of the pipe. Genesis had followed the general sound of the pipe, and he figured it led to the fountain of the hotel next door. As the Afghan hound walked through the gulley, climbing over brambles, up onto ledges. When he got to the pipe, what did he see but a little red mutt drinking from it. "What do you think you're doing?" He growled. This dog might try to claim it, they might even belong to a pack, and that was the last thing he needed.
The dog turned around, and said, "I'm having a drink. What are you doing?" She shook her fur, and it seemed that Genius' initial impression was wrong. She had border collie black and white fur. "Well my dear sheepdog, I was about to hydrate at this open water port, and then discovered you. That's what I'm doing." The sheepdog seemed amused. "Cool. You looking to get out a' this dust hole?" She asked.
"As a matter of fact," Genesis replied, "I am."
The small female nodded enthusiastically "I'm going to start a pack and then get going. And you, my friend, look like perfect second in command material. You in?"
The Afghan hound considered it for a minute, then responded with, "Yes, although that answer is quite surprising. I like being alone."
"Cool," she replied, "name's Cookie." Cookie looked at him expectantly, wanting to know his name. "I'm Genesis."
"Did you give yourself that name?"
"I did. I've never known my parents, so I named myself."
"Oh." Cookie had been joking, and she now seemed to be a mix of ashamed and embarrassed. "Well, glad to have you on the team, Genesis."
They walked off for a while, hunted down some birds, then curled up and went to sleep.
