Bayli looked over at Chase. The pair had been through a lot together. They were both being sold at a yard sale. They were both rescued to a nice family. And they had both been at the tearful goodbye, when the house had burned and the beloved humans had to move to a homeless shelter. But Bayli didn't want to think about that moment. She didn't want to relive that horror any more. She wanted to think about the future.

The truth be told, the rat terrier - border collie mix was unsure what the future was going to be. She and her partner couldn't go much farther today without food. The logical solution was to hunt.

Now, this place wasn't the model of supporting the lives of small animals. It was mostly lizards and snakes. Bayli turned a rock over, looking for prey. There was none to be found. She repeated this for a few minutes. Then a lizard darted towards her, fast and sleek like an arrow. She slammed her paw down so quickly that she surprised even herself. "Chase, Chase, I caught something!" She barked quite loudly in her exitement.

"Really? Bayli, that's great!" She inwardly glowed at the praise the mastiff had given her. Her friend trotted over. As they looked over the lizard, it was hard to tell what could and couldn't be eaten. She and Chase both laughed after a moment, and they just yanked it apart with their jaws. The thing tasted foul, but she ate it anyway.

Afterward the so called meal, Bayli smelt an unusual scent. She heard what sounded like a heated argument.
"I thought you said the squirrel went this way!"
"It did!"
"Clearly it didn't, or I would have smelt it by now."
"Ah, doesn't matter now. It was a scrawny little thing anyway."
"Hello?" Bayli anxiously went towards the source of the sound, into some bushes. It was a gorgeously colored Afghan Hound and a small border collie.
"Hi there. What's your name?" The collie asked.
"Oh, I'm Bayli. And this is my good friend Chase."
"We're pleased to meet you. I'm Genesis, and this is my friend Cookie." The Afghan said. "I'm not going to beat around the bush, Cookie and I want to start a pack."
"Not just any pack!" Cookie interjected "The best pack of them all! You two in?" Chase and Bayli glanced at each other. They both nodded slightly. Chase said, "We'll join. Sure."
"You won't be sorry! This is gonna be so great! We'll have a territory in a forest, and hunt deer, and..." Cookie continued to chatter on through the night, before the little pack found a small cave and went to sleep for the night.
