I sat back looking at the creature in front of me.

Her shimmering ocean blue stain slaps against the water. Her long dark hair, decorated with sea shells, sea glass, pearls and more. Her large brown eyes peered up at us in innocence and her pale silvery skin glistened.

“Were you the one singing?” She asked in a small voice.

I nodded, unable to form words just yet.

“What are you, miss?” she asked.

“A-a-a human.” I stuttered. The mermaid looked between me and Hunter.

“You can’t be. Nothing that beautiful comes out of a human.”

“Kyla!”

Another head was suddenly next to her.

“What?”

“You don’t say something like that.”

“Sorry but it’s true. Her voice is just too magical.”

The second mermaid huffed, shaking her head.

“Really, what are you?”

“I’m human.”

“But he’s wolf.”

“Is that supposed to mean something?”

“Well if he didn’t kill you already, you can’t be human.  No human has ever survived a Lycan’s love.” The second mermaid joined.

“Well then I don’t know what I am.” I said sitting back on my heels. I looked over to Hunter.

“Do you know what she is?” The little mermaid asked Hunter.

“I don’t know what she is, but I don’t care as long as she’s with me.” He admitted, wrapping an arm around me and kissing my head.

“Are you mated?” One asked.

“No.”

“Then your bonded?”

“Yes.”

“When are you going to mate? What about the babies?!”

“Kyla! You don’t ask people about that sort of business.”

I blushed, suddenly, realizing what they were talking about. Hunter looked over to me, his green eyes shy but curious. I didn’t say anything.

“Whenever she wants.” He said after a moment of silence.

“But don’t you have limited time-“ “Kyla that’s enough! We must go!”

It was too late. I had caught what the young mermaid had said. Limited time?

New questions formed my head.

“I’m sorry. We must go.”

The two mermaid dove into the deep, leaving Hunter and me.

He stood up and helped me and we walked silently to the beach.  Once we ran out of land to walk on we stopped at the edge of the creeping water.

We stood there for a moment, in silence, just watching the horizon be painted with the setting sun.

I finally turned to Hunter and spoke.

“What did she mean about limited time?”

He sighed, looking down.

“After the curse was lifted, we were set to a time of three weeks to fully mate, to bond.”

“Or what?”

He was silence for a long moment.

“I die.”

“Hunter.” He didn’t look at me. He just stared down at the sand and the water.

“It’s been two weeks.”

His head seemed to drop lower and he let out a long held in sigh.

“When were you going to tell me?” I said, feeling the tears prick my eyes.

He shook his head.

“You weren’t.” It wasn’t a statement but it wasn’t a question. It was just something said.

“T-then what were you going to do? Were you going to leave me alone on this island? Were you going to have me wake up to you dead-“ “No! no.” He said turning to me, finally looking me in the eyes.

“I don’t know what I was going to do. What I was thinking, alright? But being dead felt a lot better than having you regret something we did for the rest or your life.”

“You’re too selfless! You’re going to end up killing yourself one day! I won’t have it-“ “Selfless!? You think I am selfless? I’m far from it, love. Do you even remember what I did to you all those centuries ago!? That woman I killed. It wasn’t just some woman, Rosalynd! It was you!”

I was shocked. I was frozen in place. There were tears in his eyes, and he was scared.

“I couldn’t live with myself if I ever hurt you again, Rosalynd, in any way.” He murmured as I was suddenly in his arms sitting in the sand.

I looked up at him, with tears in my eyes. I tangled my fingers in his hair and kissed him with all the love I could share.

With tears in both our eyes, we loved each other, and we made sure we both knew.
