__________

Marie walked through the doors with a hint of fear in her warm brown eyes. Today she was sure of only one thing; she would see him again. A small flame of doubt flickered in her heart. It had been over a hundred years. Would he still want her after so much time had passed? She shook her head, curls swinging around as she did. He loved her, he had to. She had been searching high and low ever since her memories returned. Marie had been running until her feet blistered, and until every breath she took tore her sandpaper throat. But it was all worth it, all the pain and suffering would be worth it if she just got to see his face again. Feel his love again.

Before she could make it to the main room, new memories flooded her head. Not now, not here, not when I'm so close, she thought desperately. But it was already too late, the memory consumed her and she fell to the ground, lost in the fading remnant of a lost life.

She was being chased by a creature that hid in the shadows, and in her heart she already knew how the pursuit would end. She stumbled like a pathetic weakling, and it was over. The woman snatched her up like she weighed nothing and bared her fangs. Marie had one last move, she kicked her in the gut, and as soon as the hold on her loosened, she took off again. Not a minute later she made the mistake of turning into a dead end alleyway, and it didn't take the ripper long to find her. "I love it when they run, the chase makes the kill all the more enjoyable." Those were the last words Marie heard before teeth sunk into her flesh and her veins withered away.

That was the fourth time she had died, and Marie felt the pain all over again as she lay shaking on the floor, twenty years later. A crowd was forming around the girl's body, murmurs passing from painted lips to keen ears. It was enough of an interruption that the hosts began to notice.

"What on Earth is happening over here?" Rebekah Mikealson muttered as she shoved through the growing crowd to see what all the fuss was about. She just collapsed multiple voices said in response. When she made it to the scene, her breath caught in her throat and for a moment she was back in 1720.

"Kol?" She asked curiously, "What has put you in such a good mood? Is there a body to clean up?"

Her brother actually smiled, and there was not a trace of madness in his eyes."No bodies today, sister."

Rebekah followed him into his room and everything became clear as day. The way he looked at the paintings that hung on the walls, there was no question. "It's that girl, isn't it?"

Kol didn't answer, he simply laid back on his bed, folded his hands over his chest, and closed his eyes. Rebekah smiled, her brother hadn't been truly happy in six hundred years, he deserved some peace.

"Marie," Rebekah whispered. It was almost too good to be true, but there lay the same girl that Klaus had brutally murdered a century ago. She didn't stop to ask how it was possible, she just ran to her brother.

"Did you find out what is causing that terrible ruckus? It's ruining the party." Kol said coldly. No emotions clouded his eyes, he had flipped the switch decades ago, after the pain of losing the love of his life became too much for him to bear.

"I think you better come see for yourself."

Kol might have closed off his heart, but that didn't mean he couldn't recognize the look on his sister's face. He tossed away the glass he was holding, and followed her to the parlor. The crowd parted, and one look at Rebekah's face as she passed them was enough to send everyone back to the dance floor.

The closer they got to their destination, the more Kol's mind burned in anticipation. Whatever was waiting for them had to be good, because his sister was rarely this quiet. "Can't you just tell me what it is?"

She shook her head, glancing back at him momentarily, "You wouldn't believe me, brother."

His head began to spin. In the back of his mind he knew what he was about to see, but he didn't dare hope for it until he saw it with his own eyes.

Marie gasped for air when the flood of memories faded. It wasn't the first time the ghosts of her past lives had come back to haunt her, but it never got easier. She clutched her neck, though the horror of her last death had passed, she could've sworn she still felt the fangs sinking into her skin. There was nothing there of course, and the feeling passed quickly. She breathed deeply and clamored to her feet. Marie needed to get to the party, she would not let him slip through her fingers again.

The sound of footsteps hit her ears as she smoothed out her dress. She didn't bother looking up to see who they belonged to, because if anyone was leaving the dance this early, it was to have drunken sex, and she didn't need to bear witness to any part of that. But the footfalls stopped abruptly, and that caught the brunette's attention. She looked up from the silky blue material her dress was made from, and her heart almost jumped out of her chest.

"Kol?"
