Don't Leave Me Again (Sequel to Finally Found You)

Part 7

          Jimmy, Ben and I head out to the river on foot since I’m the only one between us three that knows how to drive a bike. Once we get there, I look around just in case.

“One long two short means it’s me.” Ben says testing his flashlight.

“All clear is two short one long. And if you’ve got Skitters following you?” Jimmy says.

          “You’ll hear the first shot.” Ben says.

          “Awesome. Wait uh, you might need this.” Jimmy tells Ben taking his compass off around his neck.

          “Weavers compass.” Ben says taking it.

          “Yeah just don’t make me come after it, that water’s freezing.” Jimmy says.

          “It’s invigorating.” Ben says putting the compass in his pocket. He walks over to me and I pretend like I don’t see him.

          “Hey, it’s later now. Can I finish where I left off?” He says grinning at me. I bite my lip thinking, knowing that he likes it when I do that.

          “Maybe, if you make it back tonight.” I tell him. He laughs.

          “Damn you’re such a tease. I’ll be right back, I’ve gotta go swim in the freezing cold water.” He yells out the last part so Jimmy can hear him. I hear Jimmy laugh and Ben starts to walk into the river.

          “Invigorating.” He yells out to us. Jimmy and I both start laughing as Ben swims across the river.

          “Oh wow he’s so stupid.” I say out loud. I sit down on the ground at the edge of the water.

          “I’m telling him you said that.” Jimmy says sitting beside me.

          “Go right ahead, it’s not like he’s gonna do anything to me.” I say smirking and looking at Ben in the water.

          “You really like him don’t you?” Jimmy asks catching me off guard.

          “Yeah, I guess I do. Why is that a bad thing?” I say looking at him.

          “No not at all. You know, whenever we’re scouting, all he ever talks about is you. And don’t worry it’s all the good things.” He says smiling at me. I smile and look down at my feet. That’s so sweet of Ben.

          “You know, a while back I used to like you. A lot actually.” Jimmy admits. Without knowing it, I start to blush.

          “Really?” He nods his head, “What made you stop?” I ask him.

          “I saw you and Ben together. You guys looked really happy and since you guys are two of my best friends, I was happy for you.” Jimmy says. I turn to look at him and smile.

          “Thanks Jimmy.” I say.

          “For what?” He asks.

          “Understanding.” I say.

          “Well now that we have that out of the way, do you mind if I tell you something? Like kind of personal?” He asks me.

          “Sure, what’s on your mind?” I ask turning to face him.

          “Well, I had a sister named Chloe; she was about 10 years old when they attacked and I was separated from her about a couple weeks after they attacked. It was just me and her alone in our house waiting for our parents to come home but they didn’t. One day we went to go look for food and a Mech shot at the car we were hiding in. Thankfully I got out with only a bruised arm but Chloe was stuck between seats in the back. I tried to get her out but before I could, the Mech shot at us again. This one killed her and I ran away. I ran into a building and I cried all night long. I felt like it was my fault that Chloe died. I’ve never told anyone any of this and it’s been bugging me lately so I just had to tell someone.” Jimmy finishes off saying.

          “I’m so sorry Jimmy. I had no idea.” I say.

          “I just really miss her Kali.” Jimmy says. I move over closer to Jimmy and hug him for a while. I finally let him go and we just sit there talking about random stuff until Ben comes back. He’s soaking wet so I give him the towel I brought just in case.

          “Damn Ben, you sure you aren’t cold?” I say.

          “I’m fine. It’s not too bad.” He says to me.

          “Well until you’re dry, you aren’t getting anything from me.” I say teasingly but also serious. I don’t want his river soaked shirt all over me.

          “Aww come on, not even a hug? I think Kali wants a hug.” Ben says walking over to me. I start to back up but I hit a tree. Just as he gets close, I dart to the right and run. Sadly I didn’t go too far before the freaking super soldier catches me. He grabbed me by the waist and picked me up.

          “Ahh Ben let me down!” I yell. He just laughs and I hear Jimmy in the background doing the same. Ben sets me on the ground again and gives me a huge hug.

          “Ben! Now I’m soaking wet!” I yell out. The boys start busting out laughing and it takes me a second to realize why.

          “Real mature guys, real mature.” I say smiling myself. Ben hugs me one more time and tries to give me a kiss but I quickly turn my face so he kisses my cheek.

          “You may outrun me Mason but I’m still quicker than you.” I say grinning at him. After they’re done with their laughing fest, we start walking back to the camp. I take the towel from Ben since apparently he’s not cold at all and wrap myself in it. Ben puts his arm around me and kisses the top of my head.

          “When we get back, I’m going to be with like 50 blankets.” I say out loud. They start laughing again and we finally reach camp in the morning. I change out of my now soaked clothes and go try to find Lourdes. I look around the camp first and then I finally make it to the med bus. I start to walk on but stop when I hear the voices inside.
