Don't Leave Me Again (Sequel to Finally Found You)

Part 10

          A few hours later, we finally reach the airport. I decide to help Anne and Lourdes unpack the med bus a little bit before doing my own tent. I feel like the Mason men need some time to together without me there butting in.

          “Hey Kali you come to help out?” Anne says when I walk in the bus.

          “Sure have, do you need any help?” I say. She tells me to start bringing some cans of water on to the bus. I lay my bow down and do as she says. Lourdes comes on the bus and starts sorting the medicine cabinet. After my chores I choose to help her out.

          “Hey need any help?” I ask her.

          “Yeah sure thanks.” She tells me

          “So, I saw something a few days ago that really caught my eye.” I start to say. She looks at me funny and begins to go through the cabinet.

          “Yeah? And what would that be?” She asks.

          “Oh nothing really just you and Jamil kissing right at the door of this very bus. Why didn’t you tell me about you and Jamil?” I say ecstatically. I can tell that she’s blushing while looking at the bottles.

          “Umm actually we’ve liked each other for a while now so I just, you know,” She says.

          “Well at least you’re over Hal now. You and Jamil are really cute together to be honest.” I say smiling. She stops moving and looks at me and smiles back.

          “Thanks Kali. How about you and Ben? How have you guys been?” Lourdes asks. I don’t know why but whenever someone asks me about my relationships, I get uncomfortable. It’s not that I’m ashamed of them it’s just that I don’t really like talking about myself.

          “Um we’re good, you know. Uh he’s been a little distant these past few months but he’s still there for me when I need him.” I say smiling at the thought of that.

          “Well that’s good. It’s pretty clear that you’re really the only person that he really likes and talks to; other than Jimmy I mean.” Lourdes says. She puts some bottles in a box with some other medical supplies and stands up to put them away. I stand as well beside her and lean against the counter.

          “Yeah, he has a really hard time opening up to people nowadays. Especially with everyone being so afraid of him because of his spikes. Do people ever talk about that topic towards you or have you heard anything?” I ask her.

          “To be completely honest Kali, some people think it’s totally wrong that you and Ben are together. You know with him being harnessed and everything. I’m not saying who but someone told me that a girl like you shouldn’t be with someone like him.” Lourdes says quietly to me.

          “A girl like me?” I ask confused.

          “You know, a pretty girl who should have all the guys chasing her but also a good fighter. Not a girl who fell for the razorback. That’s pretty much what they said. They actually did call him a razorback too.” Lourdes says looking at me. I cross my arms and look down at my feet.

          “Let me guess, Pope and his damn Berserkers. I’ve had it with them; they really need to lay off Ben and everyone else. I’m happy that Hal punched him or else I was going to do it myself.” I say pissed off now.

          “Well don’t worry I poured a bunch of rubbing alcohol on his hand when he said that. I’ve got your back Kali. Well I guess everything’s done here. Thanks for all your help.” Lourdes tells me.

          “Thanks for the Intel. I’ll see you later.” I say goodbye to her and Anne and go back to our tent. Matt and Hal are asleep so I follow their lead and try to get some sleep myself. I begin to think about what Lourdes said; how everyone thinks that Ben and I don’t belong together or that I’ve made the wrong choice. I start to fall asleep but I hear someone walk in the tent.

          I look up to see Tom walk over to Hals cot and get him up. I turn around on my own cot to try to see what happened but they’re already gone. I sit up on my bed and Ben walks in looking tired.

          “Hey what happened? Is everything alright?” I ask him. I make room for him to sit on the cot beside me and he walks over.

          “Yeah just uh, Pope and his gang tried to kill dad. Jimmy and I stopped them though. Everything’s good now.” Ben says sitting down next to me and smiling.

          “Well at least he’s alright.” I say. Ben nods and takes my hand in his and raises it up to kiss it. He lays our hands down and puts his other on top. Sometimes I wish that we could just stay like that forever, but then I remember there’s a war going on.

          “Well I’ll let you sleep.” He says. He lets go and starts to get up but I stop him.

          “Wait, aren’t you forgetting something?” I say. He turns around and looks confused at first but I grab his shirt gently and he leans down towards me. I kiss him and he gently strokes my cheek with his thumb.

          “Goodnight.” I say letting him go and smiling. He lets go of my cheek and walks outside the tent. I fall asleep that night, happy knowing that I made the right choice and that everyone else is wrong.
