Day 32

She tried not to think of him. She really did. Yet, again and again, he popped into her thoughts uninvited. One kiss shouldn't have this aftermath. It was one kiss, after all, nothing more. Parker had been practically avoiding her since that night, that wonderful and horrific night. She'd seen him a total of three times probably. Margret hadn't shown up at the coffee shop in days, which is odd. Aspyn didn't want to worry, but she worried anyway. What if something had happened to either of them? What if Margret died? What if Parker left and Margret was too forlorn to leave the house? Aspyn had to constantly chastise herself for thinking like that. She had to constantly pull herself back into reality to deal with customers.

Again, the days were dragging on. Day turned to night all too slowly. Each day, Aspyn was forced to have stale chit-chat with insignificant people. She realized how dull her days were without Parker's sarcastic, cryptic comments and his cold, detached presence. She would never admit this to him, but she kind of missed him. He's not gone, you idiot. He's just a block over, her mind would say, exasperated.

For some reason, she couldn't bring herself to visit Margret's house. Maybe it was because of the way Margret looked at her when she brought Parker home almost a week ago. Disappointment and regret pooled in Margret's eyes. Her wrinkled face twisted in pain when she saw Parker's injuries. Aspyn just couldn't see that look again.

"Miss, erm, excuse me?" A young man waved his hand in front of Aspyn's face.

She jerked back into reality and rushed out a sentence. "Hi! Whatwouldyouliketoday?"

"Whoa, slow down." He laughed wholeheartedly. "I'll just have a sweetened iced green tea, thanks."

"Yeah, no problem." Aspyn chirped. But there was a problem. She couldn't stop thinking of Parker.

Parker's injuries had healed nicely and he was up and walking around again. After that night, he felt lost. Well. More lost than usual. He walked aimlessly through town, trying to find a place to sit around and smoke, but each place he went was tainted with memories of her. He wanted an escape from her. No- he needed an escape from her. He couldn't get attached. Even worse, what if she got attached? Parker winced at the thought.

Finally, he found a tree that he could climb. Thoughts of her couldn't come rolling through his mind here- not here, she had never been her with him. He swiftly climbed the tree as far as he could and sat down on a thick branch. Leaning his back against the tree trunk and closing his eyes; he finally found delicious, silent solitude.

He let the wind tousle his hair and curve around his body. He let the sound of the birds chirping flow into his ears. He let the sunlight trickle through the red and orange leaves and land in scattered pieces on his face. For the first time in a while, he felt peaceful. He didn't even crave for a smoke, then. All he wanted was to stay here and never think again. At least for now, his thoughts were shut off.

Day turned to night all too quickly and he reluctantly decided to go back home. He walked several blocks until he saw the coffee shop. Like the sudden flow of a faucet, his thoughts were turned back on. Parker cringed at the memory of Aspyn. Just because you're walking by, doesn't mean you have to see her, he told himself.

He kept his gaze focused in front of him and walked briskly. Almost passed the coffee shop, when the door flies open and out comes Margret and Aspyn talking quietly, worried looks plastered on their faces.

"Parker! Where are you going?" Margret asked with concern in her voice.

"Just back home." Parker mumbled looking at the ground.

Relief flooded Margret's face. "Oh, good. Could we walk together?"

"Sure." Parker mumbled.

As they began to walk away, Aspyn called out to Parker.

His eyes flashed up and met Aspyn's. Her warm green eyes clashed against his cold, blank grey ones.

"What?" He barked.

"Can we talk for a minute?" Aspyn called out cautiously.

Parker hesitated for a moment and then slowly nodded his head. It's now or never.

"Why are you avoiding me?" Aspyn asked bluntly.

"It's for the best. I never should have kissed you. Sorry." He said forcefully.

Aspyn drew in a sharp breath. "Then why did you?"

"Because I did, okay? But let's leave it at that. Let's leave us at that."

"Okay, forget the kiss. But we were friends, right? Let's keep it at that." Aspyn said quietly.

He snorted and barked out a harsh laugh. "Friends? Is that what we were? Hardly."

Aspyn hadn't realized how much it would hurt to have this conversation. Right now, she just wanted to take a drive with Parker like the many other nights that they'd spent together. She knew that wouldn't happen and probably would never happen again.

Aspyn shook her head disappointingly and turned to walk away. It was done. Whatever they had, was done.

A part of her hoped that Parker would chase after her and apologize for everything. Needless to say, that part of her was let down. Parker was not the type to chase after anyone.

Midnight. A magical time for some; a despairingly lonely time for others. Tonight, Aspyn was lonely. Lonelier than she ever had been. Usually, by now, she would be sound asleep and dreaming. But, not tonight. Tonight, she lay awake thinking about every frustrating moment she had with Parker. Sure, he was frustrating and impossible, but for some reason she kept coming back for more. The first day she met him, she knew that he was trouble. He was so annoying and bullheaded, but she managed to look past that. And all for what?

All for naught.
