Edlyn is fast asleep beside my leg when I wake. My back and my wings ache from sleeping against the stone wall and my joints pop when I sit up straight. Despite my discomfort, I try not to move too much so that I don't wake her.
I'm exhausted and hungry, but for the moment, I'm at peace. Edlyn is safe and soon I will be well enough so we can continue our journey. I still don't know what I'm going to do for food—the thought of eating lizard still repulses me.
Edlyn is safe. That thought alone fills me with courage and makes me feel like all the little things I worry about are meaningless. She's safe, and that's all that matters.
Before we fell asleep, I told her the story of how Celeste and Syfi came to be. It was a sad story in itself, even with the vague ending I gave her and without the mention of the couple's tragic ending. I didn't want to tell her who the forest king and queen offered for marriage in order to replace Celeste. That would ruin the happy ending, I figured, and I didn't want to do that.
I close my eyes and lean my head against the wall, sighing. My happy ending would come when Edlyn walks away victorious from the confrontation with Anabella. That's all I need. I'll deal with whatever comes after.
