I could see them in my minds' eye. They were sifting through the remains of everyone else in the army, looking for pieces they hadn't

burned yet. One of them, the tawny one, wandered into the forest to look for more bodies. The human had detached herself from the

redhead and was talking to the vampire with the pixie cut. I didn't understand. How could they all be near the human and not

hunting? It didn't make sense. My vision swung around as the redhead suddenly looked up.

'Carlisle,' he called, 'Jasper's found something.' The blond guy vampire sped into the trees, followed by everyone else, the human

following at a jog. As I followed them into the trees, I was confused. How could the redhead have known what Jasper had found? Then

I remembered something Riley said to me. They have a mind reader. That must be him.

I stopped moving. I had reached the others.

The tawny one, Jasper, was standing as still as a rock, only his chest moving as he sniffed his surroundings. For a few seconds the

others looked merely confused, but then the wind blew in their direction and they smelt it too. My scent.

'One of them escaped,' growled Jasper, 'how could we have let this happen?'

'Calm down, Jasper. Maybe they were scared. There is no reason to go after them.'

'But, Esme, what if this one starts causing trouble? With the way it was brought up, i'm surprised it hasn't already,' Jasper retorted.

Carlisle hesitated, then shrugged. 'He has a point.' He looked at the others. 'I think we should all go. But we shouldn't destroy them

until we've heard their story. Then we can decide if they will be trouble.' Jasper looked irritated, but said nothing more.

'Bella, you're staying here,' the pixie one looked at the human.

'What? No! Alice, I want to come!'

The big vampire stepped forward. 'If we let that critter get to you...it's gonna get messy.'

'Emmett is right. It's far too dangerous,' the redhead said.

'Edwaaaard!'

'Bella! You have to go home!' It was the other blond one, the girl.

Edward looked relieved. 'Thanks, Rosalie.'

Bella looked put out. 'Well...I guess i'll see you around...yeah?' She looked Edward straight in his odd yellow eyes and said, 'don't die,'

and then she was off.

Jasper grinned. 'And now,'he said, 'we hunt.' They set off running at the speed of light.

I blinked. What had happened? That had been weird. Urrrgh! I felt like I had a hangover! Then, as my mind cleared, I remembered

something else that bastard Riley had said. Some vampires had special powers. They were rare, but they did exist. Then it clicked. This

was my gift. I could see the future. No, I thought. Not the future. The present. I got off the pavement of a dark and stinky Iowa

alleyway, scrambled over the wall, and set off at the speed of light. Being only three months old, I was faster than them. I could be in

Chile in two hours tops. But I was getting older, and my speed was starting to become that of a mature vampire. Still bloody fast, just

not as fast as a newborn. And they were coming for me, one way or another. Running would only delay it. There was nothing I could

do, and I knew it. There were seven of them and one of me. The only thing I could think of was running. So I ran.
