Chapter Two: Just A Mess

"Oy, Marcel!"

Lux called my name as I stepped off the school bus. It was a rainy, dreary day in London, and school had just started back from summer break. Finally, I was in 12th grade, and I'd be off to college soon and out of high school.

Lux was standing at the entrance of the school, leaning against one of the brick columns. She was wearing a loose band tee (5 Seconds of Summer), black leggings, and a pair of rugged, black combat boots -her signature shoes-. Her platinum blonde hair was pulled back into a messy bun. Lux had her nose pierced with a small diamond, no bigger than a pinpoint. She also had gauge earrings, really small ones, and she actually made them look good, unlike most people.

"Hey Lux," I greeted my friend with a small hug. Lux and I had been best friends since her mum, Lou Teasdale, left to be a stylist for the band Emblem 3 -you may have heard of them ;)-, and Lux went to live with her grandparents. This was really hard on her, as Lux was literally sisters with Lou, being an only child and all. My mum is a therapist, and helped Lux get through, and when I'd been at mum's office, Lux and I would talk, a lot. Ever since then, she's been my only friend.

"How're you doing?" Lux asked me while we made our way down the crowded main hall.

"OK, I guess," I said with a shrug. I was still thinking about that guy RJ's tweet from last night. I know it's silly of me to dwell on things like that, but I was easily hurt. Lux patted my shoulder. We'd reached her locker, and mine was at the end of the hall.

"You'll be fine," Lux said, and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. She skipped over to her locker like it was nothing and presumed getting her books out. I just stood there. Lux had never done that before.

"Thanks, L," I muttered, and felt a blush creep up my cheeks. Awkwardly, I made my way to my locker, in a lazy daze. I couldn't help but grin.

~Lunchtime~

"And then there's Mrs. Jenson, who's just a bloody nightmare," Lux ranted to me as we walked across the packed cafeteria. I just nodded to everything she said. Ever since this morning, I couldn't stop thinking about her, kissing me like that on the cheek. Probably not a big deal, no feelings like that, I thought. But the memories kept coming back.

"Are you OK, Marcel? You've been awful quiet today," Lux gave me a concerned look. It took me a seconds to reply and be pulled back into reality.

"Yeah, I'm cool," I mumbled, vigorously nodding my head. Maybe a little overkill.

We set our trays down at our usual lunch spot. The school is divided into cliques and groups, like all other high schools. You have the popular jocks, their girlfriends, the artists, the goths, the snobby rich kids, the social outcasts, the nerdy geeks, and then, there's me. Another kid sits at the far end of our table, quietly reading a book and eating a carrot, constantly shoving his glasses further up his nose.

I stick my fork into my spaghetti and meatballs and swirl my fork around, making a huge lump of noodles. I shove it into my mouth and chew slowly. Lux is taking small bites of her salad and turkey sandwich, holding back laughter at the way I'm eating. I swallow, then chug some of my milk, an wipe my mouth.

"Hey!" Someone shouted in an angry tone. I paused from my food, my cheeks full of pasta, and glanced up.

Josh Devine, the most feared and worshiped guy in my grade, stomped towards me, flanked by his two buddies. They were as dumb as bricks, all three of them only on earth to serve the purpose of being football (A/n: or in America, soccer) superstars. Although Josh was short, he could still beat up anyone with his muscular arms.
