CHAPTER

                             Fourteen

My body is stiff with anxiety while I lay in bed pretending to fall asleep. Every once in a while I look over at Tristis and see him struggling with the same thing. I really hope that he doesn’t think he’s fooling anyone with his fake snoring. He’s got to be the worst liar in the world.

A storm had been moving in during the day and has settled right over us. The walls echo with the sound of crashing waves, rain and thunder. Every once in a while the room lights up with a flash of lightning coming through the windows.

As the quiet conversations die out and the storm outside rages on, the rest of the room falls into a deep, restful sleep and I know that it’s time.

I sit up in bed and look over at Tristis who is either still trying to give off the impression of sleeping or has actually fallen asleep in the process. I look around my bed and find a rolled up, balled sock and pick it up. I throw it over to him and it hits him right on the face which immediately wakes him up. I desperately fight back the laughs, shoving my hand over my mouth and bury my face in the bed covers.

That shot was a one in a million shot and I nailed him right in the face.

I wait till my chuckles die down so I can again lift my head and make sure Tristis is up. He is and he’s getting dressed in all black. I stand and begin to dress in some equally fashionable, dark attire. I feel like I’m some sort of secret agent going on a secret mission and the adrenaline that is pumping throughout my body warms me, and gives my body slight tremors.

After we dress Tristis walks over to my bunk and stands waiting next to me. I pull out the box from under my bed and unwrap it from a t-shirt I used to conceal it with. I hold the box to my ear and feel the cold steal drawing heat. I give it a shake and hear a slight noise of something inside. I look at Tristis who has a giddy smile on his face and I put the box in my jacket pocket.

“Ready?” I ask Tristis fully knowing his answer already.

“You bet, let’s do this.” his face falls into serious mode as he rubs his hands together.

We head out of the sleeping room as quietly as we can. As we creep through the main hall towards Dr. Finley’s room I feel a strange sensation of being watched. My eyes shoot around the room, nervous now that we’ve been spotted. I reach out to grab Tristis’ arm, who’s oblivious altogether as he remains in his crouched walk. He stops with me and we both listen to the noises of the room. A crack of thunder echoes into the room followed by a brilliant flash of light filling the room for and instant with visibility. Aside from the constant barrage of waves slamming the walls of the building the room is silent and clear. There is no one with us that I can find. We continue our slow journey to Dr. Finley’s room, stopping to peer around corners and when we think we hear someone or something.

Periodically I find myself reaching down to my jacket pocket to pat its contents to make sure the box is still there. We round the last corner as Tristis peeks his head into the hallway to scope it out. He gives me the all clear sign and we make our way to the door leading into Dr. Finley’s room.

We slowly open the door. I would not be surprised if Dr. Finley is in here right now. He always seems to be in here working on something. Luckily he’s not, and the room is empty of any inhabitants other than us. I quietly close the door behind us and we split up, I go to the left and he goes to the right.

Looking at the expansive clutter of stuff in the room I begin to wonder if we’ll ever find what we are looking for. I start pulling out drawers carefully as to not disturb things from their resting places. I finger through some loose items but don’t find any keys. I lift gadgets on the desks, open cupboards, and riffle through drawers but find nothing.
