We drove for what seemed like hours. As we passed other landmarks of home, I said my goodbyes silently.
I tried to imagine what my friends would be doing without me now. Gabe was probably playing pool. Lolá was probably reading. Thalia's probably sitting on Hot Topic, and Justin was probably outside doing something.
I sighed. "I know you're gonna miss them." My mom said as she patted my leg. "Just think of all the new friends you can make in Georgia, though."
"Yeah." I said, just to satisfy her. I knew I was going to be out of place, but I was glad at the very least my slight southern twang wouldn't be. I watched out the window as trees flew past, creating a blurred wall of green.
"Sandy Springs, Georgia." I said the name out loud. It had a ring to it I'll admit but it was no place like home.
We drove a few more hours, and the sun started to set in the sky. It lit up the horizon and gave everything a golden glow. It was beautiful.
I watched the sky until it became dark enough to see my reflection in the window. I leaned my seat back and gave into the sheer exhaustion the day had caused me.
***I woke up the next morning with the sun shining. We had driven through the night and from a look at the Red Bull cans in the cup holders my mom was feeling the burn. I offered to drive but she declined saying I didn't know the roads, which was fair enough.
We were only forty-five minutes away from my new house and I wasn't sure whether I was supposed to be excited or absolutely terrified. Probably both.
We drove in silence until we made a few lefts and I heard my mom suck in a breath. "We're here." She pointed at a white house sitting in front of the car. I unbuckled and fed the seat belt holder. I climbed out of the car slowly, I knew I would miss my friends but this place was breath taking, and I was definitely excited now.
It was two stories, I knew that was a little much for just mom and me, but maybe mom would meet someone down here. I trotted towards the house, completely abandoning the suitcases in the car.
I turned back to look at my mom, who had a satisfied smile on her face, she was watching me. "Go on in," she nodded, tossing me a set of keys. "I'm gonna call the movers and see where they're at."
I caught the keys, and turned back to the house. I stood there for a moment, trying to imagine myself living here. I could almost do it. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all. The white house stood out beautifully, white siding, and a wrap around porch on the second floor, completed the beautiful scene.
I reached the front door and slid the key into place, I turned it until I heard the click of the lock sliding out of place. I opened the door slowly, and listened to the echo of the walls within.
It was gorgeous. Baby blue walls and white trim lined the rooms. A deep hardwood floor went throughout the house except for the living area, which was covered in a soft white plush carpet. The place was so lit up, with windows everywhere, and as I walked closer to the back of house I gasped at the prettiest sight I've ever seen. A window the size of one wall looked out upon a beach. White sand, and bright blue waters shown dramatically through the window. It was breathtaking.
I was exploring through the house, walking through the bedrooms and adventuring the second floor. I heard the clicking of heels on the staircase behind me and I turned around to see my mom, putting her phone away.
